Hi folks

Looking for a little advice.

Situation.....

Once and a while I get the rifle making a loud pop when firing. I clean the shell and find the back of the .22 has split right at the rim and neck of the spent casing. Any ideas? I'm thinking head space is an issue??? Can I adjust the clearance of the bolt?

Thanks for any tips before I strip it again.

There are headspace gauges for that. But besides a good cleaning, make sure there is no build up of dirt, old powder, etc around the mouth of the chamber where the bolt seats when closed. Also look for any tiny burrs.

Idiot here...be warned.

Which Cooey repeater? 60/600 bolt action or, 64 semi? (are there others??).

...If it's a bolt action, when you close the bolt, does it have any free play back n' forth? Check the bolt handle and, the receiver where the handle "locks" for any wear.

Regardless of action, as mentioned, check you chamber and, around it for any obstructions...bolt face too, for any irregularites

Yep--the model 62 which is basically a model 60 with peep sight and target front sight--but a lot less common.:dancingbanana:

Oh, I forgot, there is the first model repeater before the model 60. It was just called the Cooey repeater with fluted forearm or the Cooey Special which had factory hand checkering on the pistol grip and forearm. I have one of each and they are nice little guns from the early 30's.

I'm not an expert but i think headspace would be tightened by building up the receiver or the bolt handle a bit where the bolt handle locks into the receiver.

The split cases could also be from an oversize (too large OD) chamber, due to wear or corrosion to the chamber walls.

take it to a gunsmith or ship it sounds to me its headspace on the cooey thats a cheap and easy fix as the bolt handle is the locking lug but it should be dont by someone who knows what there doing

now i could be wrong with the first one and the chamber may be out of spec or there may be a build up of crud in the chamber take a bronze .22 cal cleaning brush with some hoppe's on it and clean the chamber well then run a few wet patchs down the bore from the chamber till thay come out clean the a few dry ones.

if affter that its still doing it take it to a gunsmith and have them do a chamber cast you will find out fast if the chamber is out of spec that way and may need a new barrel or a barrel liner put in.
