Hey guys,

I need some help please. I bought a Mossberg 500 Persuader about a year ago. I've shot arround 200 rounds through it and I had a lot of fun with it. However, recently, I've started to do IPSC and in IPSC, there are three guns matchs, wich are matchs where you shoot pistol, rifle and shotgun. This is awesome. But unfortunatelly, with my mossberg 500, I can't get those steel plates and popper to fall. My shotgun has an 18.5 inch cylinder choke so BBs go pretty much anywhere but on the plate since those are at like 15 yards. I know that the ammo I'm using might not help since they are really cheap but I've been told that the main problem is the choke.

So, what I would like to know is what are my options. I would like my barrel to have fully interchangeable chokes and I would also like to be abble to shoot slug with it. Also, if that's possible, I'd like to keep my barrel as short as possible. So, what can I do?

Thanks for your help.

I've been looking for the same set up, a choked 18.5" barrel would come in handy for the smaller shots (like #4 or #2)

This is not meant to sound like a 'dink' but...are you sure its just not your aim? I shoot mini poppers at 20m all the time with cylinder bore barrels ranging 8.5" to 20..5" long. A good hit will drop all of them solidly with #4 to #8). You could try patterning your hits on paper to make sure you are hitting where you think you are and it will show wht kind of bb densities you 're getting but at that distance Cylinder should be fine. Maje sure you are getting right down onto the bead and not shooting a foot overtop.
If you want to change barrels Mossberg makes them with chokes but you are probably looking at 24" or longer, alternately you could get a gunsmith to thread you barrel for chokes which runs between $100 and 150 or so as I understand.
Hope that helps

No, I'm pretty sure that I'm not aiming to high or to low since I shoot pretty much where I aim on paper target. And by the way, poppers do fall, it's the little round plate that doesn't fall. I hear a ding every time I shoot on them but they just won't fall.

Zaitsev,I hope my first post didn't come across as rude....no insult was intended.
I quite regularly see shooters, even those that have been shooting for a while constantly hit a foot high because they aren't getting down onto the bead properly.

Cheers

Don't worry Ike, I have not been insulted by your post at all. You see, I consider that I'm still a newbie and I still have a lot to learn(I'm also just a junior in IPSC so I still have a long way to go). So, any advices and comments are welcome at any time. However, in this situation, I'm pretty sure that it's not my shooting the problem.

But your advice about getting a gunsmith to add choke on my barrel is really usefull. That's probably the way that I will go. Thanks for the infos.

For the cost of getting your barrel choked you can buy a 20 in. an Accu-choked Mossberg barrel at Wholesale sports. Well it is listed for $170, if they have it in stock. It is a Mossberg cataloged item.

Bearman, I'm glad you talked about this. What is exactly an accu-choked barrel? I did look at it on Wholesale sports' site but I'm not sure of what it is exactly.

Thanks for your help.

Accu-choke is Mossbergs interchangeable choke system, Just like you want to have done to your barrel. This one comes from the factory done and you can save your 18 1/2 in. barrel for slugs. But before you spend a lot of money on your Mossberg500 , maybe think about a Remington 870 . Although both guns are good , the 870 has the option of a larger magazine 7 round+1 capacity whereas the Mossberg is locked into 5 rounds + 1 max because of the way the barrel is attached. I have both brands so this is not a one is better than the other , it is just one has an "tactical advantage" in the games people play with them. A Remington 1100 would be the recommended shotgun for IPSC 3 gun matches if we were allowed more than 5 round magazines on semi-auto centerfire rifles and shotguns. And it may be an advantage anyway to someone who can reload very fast.

Thnaks for your help on the accu-choke barrel. I didn't know that I could use my barrel to shoot slug, that's a good news. I'll have to try this out.

My Mossberg 500 has a 7+1 capacity as well and I didn't add a mag extension yet, but I will. So, I guess I'll just keep this one instead of buying a 870. I must admit that I should have got a 870 instead of a Moss 500 but still, I like my 500.

So, would it be possible for me to bring my shotgun to the three guns matchs and switch barrel to shoot slug( I don't know if that's always the case but so far, in shotguns stages, we have never shooted slug and BBs in the same stage)?

Once again, thanks for your advices.

At 15 yards you choke will be fine, the pattern wont have opened up much. Try patterning you shotgun, use a4foot piece of cardboard at the ranges you want to shoot and see where and how big your pattern is. Mark an aiming point on the cardboard, Good luck.
