This is another first time poster looking at getting a new rifle I have read lots of threads on the forum but havent found anything on the savage 111FCXP3 was wondering if anyone has one and what they think I am going to get a 30-06 I have narrowed my search to

Savage 111FCXP3

I will be hunt moose, deer, elk and bear

Is there any other brands that I have over looked that sell a rifle in this price range (cheap) I dont want expensive as the rifle will be getting banged up at time to time in the rhino and on quads so I can shrug off damage and dont have to treat in like the girl friend. I would like a detachable magazine

if you want detach mag you probably won't like the XL7. Get the Savage package and save up for a better scope like a Bushnell Elite 3200 for $250
 
Both of those rifles are reported by most owners to shoot well and at their typical prices they are good value hunting rifles. The Savage's reputation is long established so may be the safer option. It would be best if you could find owners of each who will actually let you shoot theirs, but at least try to get a chance to handle them in a gun shop. The one that feels like it fits you better probably does, and whatever it's accuracy potential, you'll get closer to it if it fits you.
 
Lately I have been hearing odd stories about the XL7 regarding bolt problems. I'd probably go with the savage. But maybe you should look at getting the rifle without the scope and putting that saved money(around 80 to 100 bucks) towards getting a better scope so you don't have to shell out later anyways. The scopes that come on these packages are pretty low on the totem pole of quality and you may have problems keeping zero soon on them (I did)
I picked up a Burris Fullfield II with ballistic plex 3-9x40 for 249 bucks on sale a while back. So for technically an extra 150 you could have a keeper scope. (the bushnell 3200 that was mentioned a post or 2 back are good scopes too)
The savage rifles are decent although lacking the accutrigger. I found the trigger pulls a bit heavy. But mine shot great with 1.25" groups with factory ammo. Anyhow, some other decent rifles to look at are Howa rifles. Great little rifles, and keep checking the Exchange forum. I haven't bought a new rifle in over 11 purchases because there are so many great used rifles out there. A good used rifle will last a lifetime and can be gotten for cheaper or the same price as your average beginner package rifle. (if you keep your eyes peeled)
 
The way your planning on banging (no pun intended) the gun around on the quad sounds like you need the best scope you can afford. Then match it to the cheapest well functioning gun you can find. That would likely be an XL7 or a Stevens.
But I'm no expert, just someone who likes reasonably priced functionality.
 
I have several Savages/Stevens and I found them to be accurate & durable. The only real difference between the 111FCXP3 and the Stevens is the scope, the detatchable mag and about $100-$200 depending where you buy from. I believe Prophet River still has some Stevens in 30-06 for $349 and for the money they are excellent. They also carry the Marlin as well for a few bucks more. Just stay from the Mossberg ATR100 (pressed bolt parts problems) and the Remington 710, 715, 770 series (poor construction and too much plastic. Feeding problems).
 
"...dont have to treat it like the girl friend..." Most guys treat their hunting rifles better than their lady friends. A rifle, much like beer, doesn't care if you have more than one or if you ignore it for months at a time, as long as you clean it properly after using it. A good rifle doesn't mind being taken out in the rain or cold either. It'll, um, perform, the same way without any complaints if it's barrel channel is sealed, either. And you won't get thrown in jail for locking it up, alone, in a dark place.
Humour aside, it's very hard to beat any Savage rifle for out-of-the-box accuracy. However, the package scopes, while serviceable, are low end scopes. Simmons, I think. A Savage 111FCXP3 will be a great rifle(doesn't come in .30-06. The .308Win, that it is chamber in, will do nicely though. Forget sealing the barrel channel on a synthetic stock), but change the scope when you can. Don't worry too much about changing the scope. It's not going to self-destruct. It's just that there are better scopes available. A moose, deer, elk or bear won't care anyway.
Think 165 grain hunting bullets, try as many brands of ammo as you can to find the ammo the rifle shoots best(required for any rifle), sight in with that ammo. Then practice shooting, off-hand, at a 9" pie plate, at 100 yards, until you can hit it every time.

Feel free to tell your lady about the differences between a girlfriend and a rifle. I don't live there. snicker.

Would a 3.5x10 scope be to much for a odd 6 ?

It probably would not. However for any given price you'll get a tougher scope with better optics at lower magnifications. Optical quality like clarity and light transmission have much more influence on your shots than magnification. Many people consider 2-7 or 3-9 the all around scope powers. I think 2-7 is best for an all purpose hunting rig, and in fact I hunt almost exclusively with my scope set on 2 power. If you can afford it forget the package and just buy the gun on its own and put a bushnell 3200 or leupold vx-1 on it. Poor quality or otherwise inappropriate scopes are probably responsible for more missed opportunities in the field than all the kinds of rifle problems combined.

That scope sounds perfect. 3.5 is nice for timber and closer shots and the 10 power is nice to confirm points or zoom in on longer shots. Your objective size should be in the 38-40mm range. 50mm is too big in my mind.
 
3.5x is enough magnification for most shooting opportunities that most hunters get. One could hunt for many years and never really need 10x, but it won't hurt to have it there as long as paying for it didn't take away from the scope's optical quality and mechanical reliability.
 
I like standard 3-9's simply because they're cheaper than 3.5-10's or 4-12's, so you can step up to a higher end model and not lose out too much as 3-9 is plenty for 99% of big game hunting.
 
I own this rifle in 06 also. You'll want to replace the base,rings, scope(seems like you got that part covered), and maybe fit a pad on it. Myself, and a few other people i've talked to who own these find the stock fits horrible and recoil is brutal for an 06. My little brother for some reason has no issue shooting my 06, but cant shoot a remmy 870, weird how that works.
