I'm considering purchasing a rws 34 in .117 but I have some questions:

I have read on a couple forums that the front fiber optic sight is extremely fragile, is this true?
How are the fiber optic sights? are they bulky making precise shots hard?
I would have preferred traditional iron sights but what can you do.
How is the noise? As loud as a .22? As loud as a .22 using cb shorts?

Any other pros or cons?

I'll be sticking to the iron sights, not much of an optics guy.

Anything else in that price range with that quality?

Thanks,

Jim

Get it from specialty shooting sports in BC or you're paying too much.......................Harold

If you buy one, the only thing you might regret is if you sell it later. It's a solid rifle but I find it too noisy for urban work. My second 34 that I bought 3 years ago still had a metal front sight. I can't comment on the fibre optics. I'd buy another if they made them in .25 cal.

I had a modern Diana 24C, same company I think. Had the fiber optic sights and I hated them, 1/2 the reason I sold the rifle. I didn't find them good on small targets, and totally distracting on bright days. I sniffed around for aftermarket iron-options and lost interest after a short while. In terms of report (I've shot a 34) it's WAY quieter than a .22lr, maybe a little louder than a .22 CB long being fired out of a full-length barrel, like the one my Cooey 75 had. If your .22 barrel is on the short side, a CB long will be comparable, if not a little louder.

In terms of options, the 34 is a spring piston rifle and they, traditionally, ARE the most quiet compared to CO2, PCP (pre-charged pneumatic) and regular pump-up pneumatics like Benjamins. I have no experience with these new "nitro piston" power systems though, but based on the YouTube vids I've seen...they don't seem to offer any advantage over a springer in the noise dept.

Thanks .22, the fiber optic quality was my main concern. I think I'll throw down some more cash for something different..
Did you end up getting another springer? what did you end up going with?

I have the Diana 34 in .22. My only complaint is those sights. I had to grind down the screws for the rear sight. They were too long, so it was moving slighly with each shot. Then that dayglow front is just too big for squirels and starlings at more than 20 yards. A hooded front post with a point would have been a lot better IMO (my eyes are still pretty good)

I bought a good solid base and rings and a 4x airgun scope after about a month.

Damn good air rifle otherwise with a very clean trigger for a springer.

Thanks Jimbo!
I think I might have found one used with the old iron sights!

I'd grab it! To your question, no, I didn't. Well, that's not 100% true. I was offered a lightly modified Chinese QB-79 CO2 rifle at a great price, REAL hard hitter with .22 pellets. I'd sort of decided to give air rifles a break after 20+ years of shooting them, but this rifle had me interested from the first time I saw one. A 9oz. refill can shoot for a LONG time, and costs about $6.

The 34 is a better rifle than this ^ and if I'm not mistaken, the 36 is a snazzier version with the same power plant.
