Pretty fresh Newbie here, but just picked up a 1981 Colt John M. Browning Commerative. New in box, never fired. Got it from the original owner, not a mark on it. Some storage scratches on the box. Have the correct key for the box.
Should I leave it as a safe queen, take it out for a day at the range, or just turn it into a fancy shooter?
Or maybe turn it into something else?
Looking for advice or opinions before my mentor arrives for the holidays,
He says - To The Range!

I would check out the market value before doing anything.
If it’s worth money as a collector piece, collect it or sell it.

If it has value and you’re going to lose money by firing it then maybe the better option is to cash it in and get something more appropriate.

My gut feel is don’t fire it, keep it in the safe. You can’t “unshoot” it.

I should add. I’m in the “guns are made to be fired” camp too. But there are collectors out there who might pay a premium.

^^^+1
if you can make money on it I would. if not Id probably keep it unfired for a year or so and see how things are looking resale wise. but get another shooter to play with at the range. probably in 9mm.

Unless you're sure that you're keeping it forever I would say not to shoot it. My sense is that a gun like that appeals mostly to collectors, and it will likely fetch a lot less if it's been shot, even a little.

I an not rich enough to own safe queens. I bought a 30 year old Dan Wesson pistol pack, and a Smith 1911 Anniversary Model.
Both were unfired, but not for long, No regrets here!

I had a couple like that come in on trade years ago, bugged the hell out of me as I did not want to shoot them , sold them; one was a python , wish I still had that, at the price they sell for these days.
I don't think the 1911's would bring much of a increase in price, but have not checked on it, Harry C, my be more up on these?

Thanks for all the ideas, and I’ll post a couple of pics as soon as I upgrade my account here.
The seller gave me a great deal on a trade basis and got our buy / sell relationship established, so i’m good on the $$
Hitzy - Ugly? I figured it would go good with a ‘81 Trans Am, Bandit Edition. Too much black not enough gold?
I’m gonna leave this in the safe as long as I can stand it.
Going back for the Model 19 now.......

Yeah...not a fan lol

Paid to upgrade my membership and still can't post a pic - so ditto to the above pic.
How long does this site take to sync upgrades?

Looks like we're sync'd. Sorry about the photo quality - my phone is in a waterproof case.

The pistol may be unfired(?) as OP mentioned in the first post. But that magazine looks like its been played with. It's got some wear streaks on it, unless that's some kind of reflection on the pic above.

Casts some doubt as to whether this piece is brand new unfired.

Looks like that in the pic doesn’t it. I’ll have another look when I get home - but I did have it the mag in and out a few times myself. And I guess it would have been test fired at the factory? Other than the mag, I can’t see any evidence of it ever been taken apart, cleaned or fired. I’m certainly not an expert, and fired or not, the $ were right. So I’ good either way.
I’ll check further and if it’s actually been fired - it’s off to the range!
