I have a 45/70 H&R Buffalo classic, i need some powder specs to shoot 500gr cast bullets. Iam using IMR 3031 powder. Not too fast, woul like to reduce some recoil. thanks age
I have had good success with both a 500 grain Lee GC and a 500 gr. Lyman GCheck useing 45.0 Gr. IMR3031 in a Ruger #3 and a Browning 78 45/70.
Velocity is about 1440 fps thru the chrony on Average....will shoot 1 inch in both rifles.
Don't know if this is reduced recoil enough for you...if you need slower speeds there are other powders that work better than Imr3031 in the 1000 to 1300 fps range.
I reload mostly black powder but occasionally load some smokeless powder plinking loads.
A nice soft shooting plinking load is the 500 gr bullet over 14.8gr of Unique. I use a 5/8"square of 1/4" dacron batting over the powder, as per the Lyman Cast bullet reloading manual.
I also use 14.8 grains Unique like "Rod B "and use cotton as a filler....very accurate at 100 yds and averages 1050 fps.
Favorite load is 24.0 grains Alliant 2400...cotton or closed cell foam filled for 1260 fps average and 1320 fps useing the foam. Have had several groups at 185 yds at the inch..and will nearly always shoot < 1.5 inches in both rifles if I do my part. All my cast bullets use Teflon Tape as lube.
