need some thoughts on caliber selection

22/250 or .223 a distant second if you want to do it the easy way. The 22/250 has an edge on the coyotes and the .223 for throwing a pile of rounds down range due to less heat.

x2. The .223 with undoubtedly do it, but once you start hammering coyotes past 200 yards, you will see how the .22-250 really anchors them. I used to shoot 60 grain Hornady sp's out of a .22-250 and they really put the dogs down.

22-250 will get you the extra distance for sure ... and 223 has lots of cheap ammo choices for plinkng.

Either one will work.

8 twist 223. This cartridge just makes too much practical sense, it's a real performer and very abundant ammo etc

What speed do you get from the 250 with those? I am getting 3389fps from 6x45 with 58gr vmax.

I would take the 223 over the others if you plan on shooting a lot. You can buy military brass cheap for reloading and there is an immense amount of reloading data for the 223 compared to almost any other caliber.
If it's a purely hunting rig with fewer shots being fired then the other cartridges might shine in other areas. All the cartridges can be equally accurate to the distances you are stating and all are great at killing coyotes.

I like the attraction of 223 for cost components and availability

You could always build a .22/06 or a .22-284 and join the 5000 fps club.

Either I have the slowest chronograph or the most lawyer proof manuals I never seem to be able to get near top velocities except my 458wm. It would be fun to cook a barrel with some 5000 fps loads. Maybe Doug could share some load data lol
How many shots you figure the throat would last?

The folks at GS Custom Bullets had an interesting article on line about their .22/06 and how they thought light very fast monobullets killed African antelope about as well as 100 gr bullets in a .243. Thèy claimed their barrel was still accurate after several thousand rounds, maybe that Somchem stuff doesn't burn hot.

I'll have to read up on it

My fear is getting bored quickly of a common chambering. I realize the practicality of it but i've never been one for drinking the kool aid of commoness

Since its a guaranteed loss of money what's the price of another barrel when all thing are added up eh?

I think I'll start with 223 then go AI version if it gets old. If that doesn't do it ill try a wildcat or 20

18 will be the year of the rifle for me as ill be completing hopefully two 250 savages and re barrel my 25/06 and a range toy

It will vary a bit by what specific barrel and what inevitable additional work is done at the same time. Theres' always something.

Having said that, for me it usually seems to end up right around 1000 bucks or the price of a decent new rifle.

I think that's about right, I've been fooling myself saying they're $600, but the invoices don't support that anymore.

With a savage action I can get shilen prefit in blue for around the $600. I don't like the look of stainless barrels on blued recievers and I know a rifle guy that could help set head space correctly.
The one 250 savage I'd like built I'm sure will set me back more than a grand. I'm thinking about using a Mauser 96 or 98 action and a custom slim walnut stock. Be a rifle for my daughter. The other will be for calling coyotes as I'm going long and heavy with my next 25/06 barrel. I got a few new places to hunt that offer longer shots for deer and wolf and it's just easier to set up one load in one rifle for each type of hunting. 115-120 gr in the 25/06 and 75-90gr in the savage. I plan to use 1-10" twist in all
I am lacking a bolt action center fire range toy
Soon ill need to make another gun room
