Need suggestion: Savage or CZ

My Anschutz asked me to tell you that it wouldn't go quite as far as saying that, hehe. It certainly does help the CZ 452-style trigger immensely, but there are still better triggers. ;) Even CZ's own 453 trigger is better.
and yeah, a Yodave trigger kit in your CZ will give you the best possible trigger compared to almost any 22 rifle.

I have owned many, many .22's over the years. Due to a tight budget raising kids, mortgage, car payments etc..., I have been forced to whittle my collection down to the bare minimum until the day comes where I can afford to keep all my toys.

That being said I sold my marlins, savages, mossbergs, cooey's, henry's, martinis and others (no rugers in my house), and kept the only one that has the accuracy, craftsmanship, versatility, and overall quality that I want/need out of a .22, and that is my 452 Scout. To me that's gotta count for something.

That's exactly why I said "almost". :D:D:D

I was thinking of my long gone Annie 1416 with double-set trigger.

I know, just thought I'd give you a hard time, hehe. There seems to be a lot of manufacturing tolerance in the trigger, and I've done a few installs of those kits for people, including one in my original Brno No. 5 from 1957. (Which is from the first run, before they even started labelling them No. 5, hehe. And, yes, the trigger is still the same way back then.) I've even fired a 452 that didn't even need a kit, no creep at all. But for the ones that do have some creep, and the amount does vary, the kit usually gets rid of it all and makes quite an improvement. It is a very decent trigger after that.

having gotten into this game recently (got my pal about a month ago), I ended up choosing to purchase a CZ 453 Varmint. After taking it to the range, if felt better than my friends anschutz.

When I first started looking at a .22 rifle, someone told me "If you want something to take to the range, and have fun with then Savage is the way to go. If you want something you'll be able to give to your grand kids, go with the CZ."

Hope this helps.

I think it's fair to say that the CZ rifles are a bargain, and seem to be built much better than their price suggests it should. They're still kind of "old world" in that sense, built with quality in mind, even if they're not the most expensive.

I think if you closely examine both, you'll start to see things on the Savage that were obviously for cost-cutting here and there, but not so much on the CZ. My Savage seemed to say "cost-cutting" in almost every respect, but my CZ only seemed to have been a victim of that in two areas. The mag well is plastic, whereas the mag well of the old 1957 model I have is a steel piece. And the trigger guard is just a bent piece of steel, but the old one is a machined piece.

Seems like everything else is still built the way it always was, and is still of the same quality. But then you look at the Savage and while it is possible it will shoot well, (and believe me, some don't), it doesn't look like it was built with the same old-world craftsmanship at all. Looks like it was built to a price-point. I think you'll see what I mean right away once you start comparing the two again.

what about the zastava z5?
it's modelled on the cz/brno, is all wood and metal, and metal mags and mag well.
They get pretty nice reviews, for about 300 bux before tax/scope/etc.

CZ are a well made rifle, for a reasonable price. Savage are cheap in price, and they tend to be fairly accurate, but they aren't of the same quality.

I just ordered the bvss special edition.

I was quite torn between this rifle and the cz 452 but in the end I thought the special edition deal is a pretty good bang for your buck deal and these are canadian made.

In my opinion,

Stainless steel heavy barrel is nicer than tapered blued and the spiral barrel is just icing on the cake.

Stock finish has to go to CZ. I have a CZ shotgun with the walnut stock and its very nice. But, i do like the look of the black laminate with the stainless in this package.

Savage is a little cheaper all in.

Accutrigger rocks.

For a target fun to shoot rifle i dont think you can go wrong with the savage.

The laminate stocks on both look like the Boyds rimfire thumbhole ones though, so I don't see any reason for the laminate finish to vary between the two, unlike the plain wood stocks.
