Why do you want something compact?
Just an honest question to help us understand the type of hunting and terrain.
Hey there,
Are you open to lever actions? If so, you could check out the BLR Lightweight in 300WSM (22" barrel) or the 300WM (24" barrel). I think they are a beautiful, classy gun and love the idea of a detachable mag on a lever. The stock has a pistol grip, but it isn't like the McMillan stocks if I'm thinking of the same kind.
If you want to stick with bolt, you might be able to find a Sako 85 Bavarian on Equipment Exchange for around the $2K mark, or if you want different, I think the Bavarian Carbine is beautiful. It's available in .30-06, which isn't exactly what you want, but it's still got lots of punch. Again the grip maybe isn't what you're looking for.
The Sauer 101 Classic?
The Winchester Model 70 Supergrades have beautiful wood, and I've seen some Featherweights with really nice wood as well, just have to look at a few. No detach mag on these, but a really nice action....
Choices, choices!
Good luck with your choice!
yes. You end up with a very noisy 30-06. But other than that there are a few options at the top end of the range that would be interesting.
