Need SVT-40 info STAT!

If you have a case jam, you can open the breech by placing the butt on the ground and stepping on the cocking handle. Don't do it if there is still a round in the chamber!

Great and reliable rifle, only ever had it jam on me once, when I set the gas too low and forgot the tool at home:redface: You are gonna have a hoot tearing it down to clean!
 
so why do they have the groove for the scope mount. but most do not have the notch cut out for the scope.

I guess what i really want to know is can I scope it without alterations? or can they be modified to repro snipers without babbafication?
 
The Russians were very big on scoped rifles. Their snipers were very successful with the PEM/PE/PU M91/30 setup. But that requires skilled labor to modify existing rifles so when the SVT was supposed to displace the 91/30 as the standard infantry weapon they built in the mount. Hence, receiver grooves. The mount just slides on the receiver and you fiddle with the knobs until you get a zero.

The issue is that the SVT barreled action moves in the stock creating a wandering vertical. This is NOT cool if you want to shoot a German from cover and your bullet passes harmlessly over his helmet. Russian snipers who merely annoyed German troops had very short lifespans.

So after mid (end?) '42, no more grooved receivers.

Do all SVTs wander? Depends on the stock inletting. Are they still an excellent value in Milsurp firearms? Yes. Is there a better choice for a sniper clone? Absolutely.

Just mount a bayonet and marvel at the FOUR AND A HALF FOOT LONG rifle on your kitchen table. Then you don't need a scope.
 
The scope mount from frontier has 3 bolts on top to tighten the scope mount to the receiver plus 2 set screws on the back.

is this a reproduction of what it would have looked like in WW2? whats with the cut out notch?????? where does it come into play??? i don't want to sound like a broken record hear. but i'm a little confused.

No sir. Not one bit.

GOOGLE SVT-40 scope mount. Use the "Images" tab. The mount that looks like a wishbone with a scope on top? That's the real thing. Above is a cost effective solution to scoping a rifle that HAS the grooved reciever. It accepts Weaver rings which means modern scopes in a wide variety of colors and flavours.

Dude, it's a battlerifle. It's not a sniper rifle. It failed in that role. It will never be a tack driver. It is accurate enough to kill an enemy soldier or reasonable paper facsimile at distances farther than most ranges can accomodate... over open sights. Don't sweat the scope. Learn the gun. Shoot it. Clean it. Love it.
 
I was thinking it could be the one and only gun from my current collection (see signature below) that i would ever dream of scoping...mainly for hunting purposes. but in doing so i would probably kill two birds with one stone and make a repro sniper. i would never put that big thing on my svt. looks the way a 69' charger looks on 20'' tricked out rims and low profile tires. (Not Right)

That's actually kinda funny 'cause the '98 is probably a better hunting rifle =)

8mm Mauser is readily available to most hunting stores (and Canadian Tire) in softpoint which 7.62x54R is not. 8mm Mauser is also a rimless cartridge so no fiddling to get the rounds to feed when they don't stack in the mag properly. The K is lighter on the long walks and being WAY shorter and noticeably lighter, it's quicker to bring up onto point - especially in brush.

Iron Elite used to make a no-gunsmith mount for the K that carried a good rep. I have no idea about availability though.

If you want a reproduction SVT 40 scope mount Trade Ex and Zefram have 'em.

If you want a repro Russian sniper get one of the ones Trade Ex or P&S Militaria are selling. You can get 7.62x54R in factory hunting ammo (not too common but its out there) or reload.
 
wow! expensive stuff! i'll have to wait for that stuff.( If I decide to go for it) I like that i can convert it rather easily. then i can take all the parts off and i'm back to my regular old svt-40. no babbafication. love it.
 
Me and my buddy each ordered one from Tradex last Friday, I almost fell out of my chair when I saw the price: $299!!! ($340 shipped +taxes).
I got my laminated M44 from them last year, and I was very pleased with the condition of the rifle, and the speedy delivery (5 working days).
 
this is my x-mass present to myself. i can't wait for this thing to get here. it'll be the first time i ever see an svt. I love getting stuff in the mail. especially RIFLES!

I think you'll like it. It really is a cool rifle. Nice clean lines, and features that were ahead of it's time. Also it's the real thing, not a copy.

Anyone know where to get extra mags for them?
 
speaking of mags. will it likely come capped at 5? I read somewhere they were originaly issued with 3 mags. its too bad 2 get lost on the way.

Hi all,
i just received my order from tradeex; a nice 1941 kovrov svt 40. But there is stranges markings on the top of receiver i have never saw on a svt... There is the usual kovrov arsenal marking + refurbishment box, but there is also a ''s'' in a cicle and a DE09 UA written on the top of receiver (not serial number). Any idea of the meaning? Thanks

New United Nations import markings we keep hearing about. Not sure what Country of origin (Germany maybe).
 
been there saw that its the most awsome SVT 40 pict I've ever seen hmm..... should post that as a wall paper......
