I got this 9mm AR upper at a local gun show, added on the crappy red dot, and then slapped it on top of my Norinco CQ-A lower (yes, I can hear the eye rolls and flames coming already) and as expected, it doesn't work.

Everything fits ok, rounds load and eject properly, but I get light primer strikes every time and no fire. the lower functions perfectly on the Norinco .223 upper, and my awesome googling skills are leading me to believe that the issue might be a weak hammer spring that can't deal with the extra hitting power needed for the 9mm BCG.

Anyways, threads are useless without pics, so any helpful info you guys have as far as parts you recognize, or if you've run into things like this before, would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

you need to install a 9mm hammer.... common problem

TinkerBell,

Any chance it's because the norinco hammer is notched and replacing it with a rounded hammer will fix the light primer strikes, or does it need the specific 9mm hammer?

the upper notch is the issue, not sure if rounded hammer will work..... and yes it will fix light hammer strikes.

Ok, may sound like a stupid question, but will the 9mm hammer be backwards compatible with the .223 BCG? If not, might be an excuse for a new lower build!

Thanks for the feedback!

Gary.

yes the 9mm hammer will work in 223 ar15's no problem..... if you're shooting norinco ammo i would recommend a wolffe extra power spring..... i have had several 9mm's and frankly it is always nice to have a lower specific to 9mm, makes it easier with the mag block if nothing else. and frankly lowers are cheap like borscht.

Awesome news! Thanks, I'll get the hammer swapped ASAP and I'm sure now that'll fix it.

I reload my own 9mm for my pistol, that's why I got the 9mm upper for the AR as well. It came with the magwell adaptor, I was told it was a colt take-off and used to have a suppressor on it as it came from the states.

Got that new hammer ordered, a charging handle, and a muzzle device for the 1/2x36 barrel. Thanks for the link!

While it may have been on a Colt lower, it looks like a Bushmaster upper.

Just got my parts delivered today, swapped in the hammer already, the thread on the muzzle flash hider is wrong (1/2x24 not the x36 I ordered), the finish is awful and they sent a .223 caliber so I can't use that. Going to hit the range this weekend and I'll post back after.

Thanks!

Gary.

Got out to the range, tried out the new 9mm hammer I put in, and everything worked great! Thank you all for the advice and help!

It worked on both the 9mm and 223 uppers. Boy what a fun thing that 9mm upper is, went through 100 rounds in no time!
