Need to add a Semi-auto?

The last semi-auto 22lr I owned was a 10/22 VLEH. My son enjoyed dumping 25rnd mags with it and I shot it rarely so when the novelty wore off it got sold. That was several years ago and I've only owned bolts since.

I currently have enough bolts now (and a Lever) each one filling a niche in my 22lr shooting enjoyment. So I got to thinking I should add a Semi-auto.

I'm not into the "tacticool" stuff so it came down to 2.
1. Ruger 10/22 Carbine #1103, 18.5"bbl with a wood stock.
2. Marlin 60 with a wood stock.

I know....BORING!:) But I'm am a bit of a traditionalist when it comes to certain "toys".

I owned a Marlin 981T that shot like a lazer with most bulk ammo within rimfire range. I even liked the fact that I didn't have remember to bring mags. It ended up getting sold because I had too many bolts at the time (if that's possible)

Here's the problem.....there are no Marlin 60/wood stock anywhere however, the Ruger is available.
So, should I hold off until the Marlin starts getting stocked again (who knows when) or should I get the Ruger Carbine? No I'm not going to buy both:rolleyes:

What to do.....hmmmmmmm

I have bought a couple Win Wildcat 22lr for the grandkids. Well i have kept one for me. Awesome little SA rifle. JP.

I would pick up the Marlin model 60 then get an aftermarket stock for it. I bought a Marlin for $149.00 Cdn plastic stock it looks good shot under 100 rounds - you will truly enjoy the tubular magazine it make the gun a "Grab and Go"

Seriously? I think there are more models of semi-auto .22 than all other actions combined. And those are the only two you can think of?

I can think of many but I'm open to your suggestions for a wood stock, with a traditional "look" (non-tacticool). Not interested in extended mags, or add-ons/mods.
A Semi I can take out and plink with when I don't feel like "racking".

I like the fact that the Marlin 60 has the bolt hold open on empty which is rare in a 22lr(?). I did see a RIA 10/22 clone that does this with their mags.....

The 981T I had was very accurate and I didn't mind the tube mag....thus the interest in a 60. Although my budget is more, for ~$300 it seems to fit my needs best leaving me more $$ for a palette or 2 of ammo:)

My Marlin 795 (Marlin 60 but with a mag) is excellent. Compared to my 10/22 it has a last round bolt hold open, a smooth working bolt release button and a very accurate barrel. Stock gun vs stock gun the Marlins are very hard to beat. If you go with the 795 you can get banana mags as well!

The only downside is that the Marlins are incredibly hard to find right now, and wood stocks and stainless models even more so.

Just a note - I looked on ####### and saw several new or 'near-new' 22s in the TO region. Yep, NO Marlins around TO. Many more across Canada if you'll try 'shipped' w/o seeing gun. I'd hold out for Rugerlin and maybe get a Savage 64 until then. Under $200 and about as accurate as a 10/22 stock config. And you can buy wooden stocks for them too.

Traditional wood and blued steel. Winchester 63, 490, 190, 290, 77, 74. Mossberg 51, 151, 251, and 351 in any number of flavours including full wood looking 'military trainer'. Remington Speedmaster. Savage 6 or Stevens 87, full size rifles, in both tubular and box magazines. Browning BAR and that slim little Automatic that ejects out the bottom. Anschutz, Brno, CZ, Tyrol, all make semis. If you really want to have something different, look for a 10/22 "Finger Groove" model from way back. I never should have sold mine.

I would suggest a 10/22 but a bit more upscale like the Ruger 10/22 International Rimfire Semi-Auto Rifle - 22 LR with a very nice wooden mannlicher stock. Reliable Gun has them in stock. I'm talking from my personal experience since I own a Ruger 10/22 International mannlicher stainless. A very accurate and well built shooter.

Grouse Man....thanks for that list! I'm liking the Winchester 190/290. IDK what it is but a tube feed 22lr rifle appeals to me hence the Marlin 60 and (now) Browning SA.
I realize there's a huge difference between the two re fit/finish/materials etc, and while the Winchester tubes are also an option....I 'd rather purchase New or NOS. I have this "thing" about putting my own dings and scuffs on the rifles vs getting one with someone else's.....

I've own several of both and neither stayed in my collection for long ... The ruger is extremely reliable, but very inaccurate. The Marlins I had were made by Remington so they had feeding issues, broken trigger guards and crooked sights

That CZ 512 looks nice, never seen one 'live' ;-) Is the 'plastic' trigger group housing durable? I'd guess so since they've been around several years I see. CZ website has good pics. And YES, ####### is a reliable place to shop and sell. I've done both for several years. If you set it for your home 'shopping' region you can get a good idea of the market. And I searched the whole site and found a SS Model 60 in NF but the owner wants to trade. If I wanted another 60 I'd be trying to talk him into selling for cash - NIB and never fired !! S/B worth the effort.
