Need to buy a scope for 30-30 and don't know anything about them.

I just bought a Marlin 30-30 and want to get an appropriate scope for it for doing some hunting. I know that it's not the ideal hunting rifle, but it's what I've chosen for a few reasons. Including SHTF situations where I'll want a light rifle with cheap ammo that will still do the job. I plan on doing some hunting this year with my step dad and he'll already be bugging me for my choice of rifle, so if I can show up with the right scope it'll help out a lot. Thanks for any info! One that's not going to outprice the rifle would be nice too

Couple of questions you need to answer. Don't know about scopes or the rifle? What kind of hunting do you do? Do you reload?

A standard 3 - 9 x 40 from Bushnell, 3200 series or a Leupold Rifleman or VX 1 in the same power will work nicely. Marlins take a one or two piece weaver type base on the top of the reciever that is pretty inexpensive. .30-30 Win is a gentle cartridge that can be quite accurate and handloaded to give better performance. Take a look at the Hornady loads with the special soft, but pointed bullets, they have some pretty impressive balistics. In Europe, .30-30 win is 7.62 x 51R.

I would gravitate towards a low powered scope like a 2-7. Low power has the advantage of being better up close and on moving game. Hopefully the 30-30 will be used for shots of 150 yards or less. The 30-30 nicely fits the needs of a light, repeater, compact for carrying in the bush. The scope should ideally add to that scenario, not detract from it by being large and high powered. I had peep sights on my 30-30 and it was excellent for shots at 100 yards or less and quick to sight with.

To answer your questions, I don't know about scopes, I will only be hunting deer, and no I don't reload. I deffinately like the idea of using a lower powered scope as I don't plan on attempting any long range shots. Thanks for the recomendations!

wheres this guy live? the type terrain he hunts will dictate his scope choice more than internet opinion. go for a wide FOV and lower power in brush, higher X in open areas, or a vari-X if its really a really diverse area.

Leupold's 2.5X20mm ultra light would be the cats ass on a 336.

The mentioned 1-4X20mm would also be awesome. I have both optics on different rifles, love them.

Yep 4x will certainly let you hit anything accurately as far as a 30-30 will carry & 1x is absolute best in the close thicker stuff with the widest FOV. IMHO

Thanks for all the advice. I ended up going with a Bushnell Legend 2-7 X 32. I'll be sighting it in this weekend. Should be fun!

One more thing, sight in using the original iron sights first, then put the scope on and sight in with that. That way if the scope goes kaput, you can still remove it and keep on hunting with the iron sights.
