need to lube cast bullets?

I have read a few references of the need to lube cast bullets. Can anyone verify for me if this need to lube refers to bullets that are cast buy the shooter only or if it also refers to a need for the shooter to lube cast bullets bought commercially (from a source like the bullet barn, or other)?

I'm a bit new to the whole cast rifle bullet thing so please have patience... :)

Cast your own obviously must be lubed. Commercial cast bullets can be purchased lubed or not lubed and should be clearly stated as such. If in doubt, it's pretty clear what you have - the lube grooves will be either clear, or filled with a (usually coloured and hard) waxy lube.

I cast all my own and am a fan of the Lee Alox lube.
 
Dumb question here, I am going to cast for my 25-20, the velocities are going to be about 1500 fps, would I need to use lube with such a low velocity?
 
Yes! That's mid-velocity for cast bullets. Buy the Lee Alox lube. Ultra simple to use, one $4 tube will do a few thousand bullets.
 
Generally, cast bullets you buy are already lubed. Bullets you cast yourself need lubing. Factory cast will have a waxy looking lube on the bullet.
1500fps is too high for cast bullets unless you use a gas check.
 
I'll play the devils advocate...we test cast bullets(hard cast) to 2,000fps without appreciable leading, these are plain base design, bullet fit is a more important factor than speed(within reason).
