So I am building a precision deer rifle on a 700 sa. I got a McMillan A5 on the way in dessert camo. Also ordering a V-Bull mag when Ed gets back to me. Anyways, I want to shoot 95 gr bullets, and I want a shortish barrel. Whats a good build for the barrel. I'm not familiar with 243 stuff, its new to me, so what length should I get as I want it on the light/medium side but still accurate as possible. Also what contour, twist, grove, bla bla bla.

Suggestions?

I agree. 1:9 for 90-95 grains, and in fact I would suggest 1:8, which would allow you to shoot just about anything you wanted in a heavier bullet.

For weight, go with a Chromoly steel barrel in a light sporter contour such as a #2. This will be accurate as hell, but will be too light if you are planning on using it for long strings of shooting at targets... you'd need to let it cool down.

obtunded is right go with a 1-8 twist and you will be covered in all ways.
contour wise i would pick a #7 and i would not go less than 22 inches!
barrel wise, take your pick at one of the canadian manufactures like gaillard,mc clennan, rks, or you can have a kreiger from obtunded or a shilen from mystic!

I have

a Rem 700 .243 Youth model. It has a 9.25" twist and the barrel is 20". I am fortunate enough taht it stabilizes bullets from 55gr right out to the 105A-Max's. The a-Max's have been shot out to 500 yards as well.

If you are not wanting to go heavier than 95gr bullets a 1-9 or 1-10 will do just fine in a 20" tube.

I am planning on a Gaillard 1/8 light varmint contour at 22in. for a .234 WSSM.
Ron.

Ted makes nice barrels; I have used many myself. Let me know how you make out with the 6 super short. I have a couple of acquaintances that have tried these and gave up as they were difficult to get dialed-in. There is not much barrel life to play with when finding that load too.

I nearly junked the WSSM. It took extensive load development. I found the 75g V-max moly would hold .75 min. out to 500m. with a max load of H-380. I could not get anything heavier to stabilize in the factory 1/10 tube.

I'd love to give you My answer, but it would be biased.

Both Krieger and Gaillard make good barrels. Both have made bad barrels, although I have yet to hear about one in the hundreds of Kriegers I've sold. The compelling factor that makes me recommend a cut-rifled/cryo treated barrel is barrel life. The 243 is a barrel burner and every little bit will help. Both are good choices and at the end of the day I'm sure you will be happy.

This was a poll that was done last year...
