Need your advice on an accurate off the shelf rifle...

Thinking of getting a heavy-barreled rifle mostly for shooting paper off the bench that would offer the potential to be used on deer as a back-up / loaner.

Was in Cabelas the other day and the options include in no particular order:

Tikka T3 Varmint Stainless
Browning ABolt Target
Remington 700 SPS Varmint
Savage Model 12

I would welcome your thoughts/experiences on any of the above guns.

Cartridges I am interested in is likely .308, but I am hoping that if I choose the Tikka, Prophet River can get it in 6.5x55.

I wouldn't want to have to lug any of those around for a day of hunting unless I was sitting in a stand not far from the road. LOL

A nice alternative is the Savage 10 Precision Carbine as it has a medium contoured barrel, but it is heavy enough.
 
I'm in the same boat. I have narrowed it downt to the tikka or rem. 700 chambered in .308. I'm trying to get one for under $1000. There are a lot of good options. I'm having a hard time making a decision and pulling the trigger. So to speak :D

This is my main hunting rifle and it makes a great bush gun with it's 20in barrel. It is heavier than my Tikka T3 but a lot easier to waking in the bush with. Highly recommended.
I also tried a 700 LTR before the 10PC after drinking the Remmy 700 Kool Aid and it was promptly sold, I wasn't impressed by it at all.
 
Ok I own the Savage 12 FVSS and my shooting buddy owns the Tika Varminter his cost about $400 more than mine! With that said his stock is slightly better than mine and has DBM. We take turns winning our shoot offs each week he has a Nightforce BR and I have a Sightron S111 if I was to do it all over again and money not a worry I would buy the Tika! MHO
 
Call me risk-averse, but I'd look at the secondary market to be sure that accessories or aftermarket parts are readily available. I cheaped out and bought one company's shotgun when I probably should have gone with the mainstream. I've discovered everyone seems to make stuff for the other gun. :(
 
One word... Weatherby! I don't know if you looked at one or not, but if you havent, I highly recommend it. They don't have the heaviest barrels but the Sub MOA's are in the same price range as the guns your looking at. If I were you I'd be torn between the Abolt and the 700 and a Wby Vangaurd.

There's a significant price difference in the models you list here. If money were no object, I'd personally go for the Tikka.
 
The Savage model 12 is insanely accurate!! But as a possible hunting rig I would cross it off the list as it has to be one of the heaviest guns short of a .50 cal :)
 
I purchaced a savage le2b a number of years ago..... junk. Bbl fouled terribly(brutal tool marks just rough), would not extract or eject reliably, horrid fit in the stock. I have since fixed Those issues several years later by wasting even more money on it. My advice is buy something worth owning. A light target bbl is the way to go for hunting. I sure would love to pick up an ssg but I am kinda hung with the savage.
 
This is a Ford-Chev-Dodge question. Just get what you like and can afford. Just stay away from Mossberg. Factory gun shooting factory ammo, it doesn't really make a difference what you get. Fit and comfort make more difference.
 
Do not purchase the Tikka t3!

Iv shot one, and belive me, they are sub moa.... but for the money you spend you can get much much better!!!! and plastic mags are garbage!!!

Stick to a remmington 700, worlds best rifle action, and for a reason!! you wont regret it!!


My frined owns a tikka t3, and they just arnt worth the price tag, a similar rifle can be had at 1/3 the price..... best of luck, i cannot vouch enough for that r700.
