Hey guys,
Need some help and info about a couple of things.
First, I have been offered a late 80s vintage S&W 610, no dash, 10mm 5 inch revolver. I didn't know S&W made a revolver in this caliber. Is this gun rare? And, more importantly, what is it worth? I don't want to short change the seller or myself here. It was used in IPSC competition by the original owner in the 90s. Looked to be in good shape. Has a bunch of full moon clips with it.
Second, he told me he shoots .40S&W through it and, in fact, is all he shoots through it. Is this true? Can a 10mm shoot .40S&W, like a .38/.357 thing?
Lastly, he is willing to let me try it first but can't go with me to the range due to work. He is willing to leave the gun and registration at his house for me to pick up from his wife. But she won't be home when I'm done so he said it would be fine with him if I took the gun back to my house. My question is: IS THIS LEGAL?
I have full RPAL and LTATT and range membership. Please let me know!
Thank you!

PS His other potential sale is a Beretta CX Storm in 9mm restricted barrel. I can only get one of the two. Which would you pick?

It is fairly rare and sought after I believe. Yes it can shoot 40 but you have the same issue as 357/38. It needs to be cleaned well after shooting 40 or the powder residue will make it difficult to seat the 10mm.

That arrangement definitely is not kosher

If only 1, the 610 for sure, but that beretta has no appeal to me

There are no issues with him lending you the gun provided you take possession of the registration while you have it.

You will need STATTs to transport it from his residence to the range and from your residence to his residence. Your LTATT will cover you transporting it from the range to your residence.

Silly, I know, read the conditions on your LTATT.

Thanks for the replies but I'm confused here:
gdawg says the "arrangement definitely is not kosher" and gnmontey says it's fine as long as I get a STATT between houses...so which is it?
Also, anyone know how much the gun is worth? I would love to get the deal done asap and go hunt for some 10mm ammo! BTW, anyone know a lower mainland source for 10mm?? Cheap, preferably? I haven't shot a 10mm since the early 90s from a Delta Elite!

Depending on the condition, on the low side $850 to $1000 and on the high side $1500 These guns are highly sought after and extremely hard to find. I have turned down $1600 for my 610.

They are a 10 mm revolver and yes you can shoot 40 s&w with no issues.

If you can, buy it before he changes his mind.

A quick call to your CFO will tell you for sure what you can and cannot do.

You cannot use your LTATT to retrieve the pistol from his house. Period.
IF he took the pistol to a range, gave you the registration and gun (lend it to you) and you then took it to your house you are legal.
To return it you would need to take the pistol (& registration) to your range and give it to him there. His LTATT would get him back to his house legally.
Stupid, yes.
Is it the law, unfortunately, yes...
As for the 610- if you don't want it many will it is a popular and rare model- I never even knew they came into the country in 5"- all the ones I saw were 6.5".
Personally, I'd skip the Beretta.

Yes, do call the CFO, although my experience has been that the answer you get depends upon who you actually talk to and two back to back calls may yield two different answers.

I reality all that you are doing is transporting a legally registered firearm per the conditions set out in you ATTs. The registration does not state who it is registered to and the ATT does not list a specific list of firearms to be transported.

Unless BC does it differently?

Yes the CFO will sort you out. Let us know how you like the 610. Can't go wrong with it

Wanstalls and Calgary shooting centre usually have 10mm.

Just called the seller after hearing from you guys to just buy it and told him " I'll take it"!! He will start the transfer tomorrow. He will throw in a box of .40 ammo, about 10 full moon clips, all the brass he can find, a Gongale Alves wood and a Hogue rubber grip.
Thanks gdawg for the Wanstalls tip! And the addiction continues!
I thought my collection was complete last year with a .308 rifle and now I get a 10mm! This will never end!

Oh... that kind of loophole.

My favorite loophole is "If I can get this one, I'll sell this other one, but now is not a good time to attempt to sell a hunting firearm".
12 months later you still have the one you claimed you would part with.

Haven't tried that one yet! I've done the "this deal is too good to pass up and i don't want to spend more money on it later when I can get it this cheap now" loophole twice and I traded one gun for two guns once. This 610 deal, I traded some work for it so wifey said ok, so my kid was right about the loophole!

In any event, post picks of the 610 when you finally get your mitts on it. Sounds like an interesting Smith. I have 5 Smith revolvers, every one is unique in it's own way.
