Hey everyone, this is my first thread, and I promise I won't make another unless I have a good reason.

I am planning on getting a 1911 any day now, and have narrowed my choices down to three guns made by two companies. They are:

The Norinco M-1911A1 'Government' .45 ACP $325

http://www.marstar.ca/gf-norinco/1911A1.shtm

The Norinco NP30 High Capacity .45 ACP Nickel Plated $450

And lastly the Rock Island Armory G.I. .45 $550(includes a lifetime warranty)

Now I think I know most of the prevalent problems with each gun because I've researched them a while, but I want to know which you think is the best deal? I've heard all Rock Island guns come with a lifetime warranty(is this true? they don't have much information on the site), and that is the main reason I've left the G.I. in the race. I don't plan on doing any form of upgrading on the gun unless I have to, so don't think about how you would spend the extra money or anything like that, any money leftover can go toward one of my other addictions. The main things I'm looking for are reliability, accuracy, and longevity and I'm not choosing any other style of gun beside a 1911, and don't need suggestions on other guns because I want to narrow down my choices or I'll be studying 1911s for weeks to come. I appreciate any help you can offer me.

Make sure you know what you are getting your self into with a double stack 45 (i.e. NP30 High Capacity).

double stack == big grip.

Make sure you can afford to shoot it. 45acp is not always readily available and is expensive to shoot if u are using factory.

This has been done before. If you want an "entry level" 1911, click the Armco link at the top of the page and buy a tweaked Norinco from Gunnar. There's no better way to start. You get forged steel and a refined pistol from people who know what they're doing for chump change compared to what you pay for other 1911s that don't work half as well.

The Rock Island Armory guns are made by Armscor, same slide, frame, and barrel as the STI Spartan. The internals/trigger/sights are different, however (all Armscor parts). I would suspect that based on that, it would be a "pretty decent" budget pistol, and probably a better buy than a lot of other inexpensive 1911s (think GI knockoffs from Springfield and Para, maybe the Remington R1 as well???).

That being said, I still think in that price range the Nork offers the most for the least. Especially a tuned model that's been checked out by a respected shop. The next "step up" would be something like a Spartan proper, or maybe a cheaper Kimber in the 750-1000 range. The Nork is a "known quantity" whereas I haven't heard much about the RIA on these forums (lots on other 1911 forums, pretty well-regarded).

the advantage of the Rock Island armory is that you have nothing to do ( no modification) to make it shoot good. I doubt that Norinco shoot good without it.

And a tuned norinco is still a norinco, finish is so so, compared to rock island.

I was going to suggest a 1911 STEYR but it seems you already have decided on a copy of the 1911 COLT.

Colt is really nice, especially the pre-1927 Commercials. Also very nice are the Argentine models: real quality, real history, real guns and not a great deal more than you pay for a Chinese copy.

1911 STEYR just gets no respect, even though it has half as many parts as the Colt, holds 8 instead of 7, produces 420 fpe instead of 385. fieldstrips into 4 pieces total and is so accurate that it's scary.

If you have your heart set on a Colt Government Model clone, pick them up and hold them. One will FEEL BETTER in your hand; that's the one to buy. Sounds silly, I know, but it works. I picked mine from a whole pile of surplus ones, trying each one in turn with eyes closed, always came back to ONE that just felt better. Shoots VERY accurately because I have CONFIDENCE in that gun. Give it a try.

Good luck.

I wouldn't bet on a lifertime warranty meaning much in Canada. If you need warranty you will likely only get it from a good Canadian dealer. My understanding anyway.

Just a suggestion...put your name on the list for a Remington 1911. I got mine yesterday and they are nice and the price is about $700.
