I have a Sig P226 and quite like it but Ive always thought id like to have a glock 17. I'm a target shooter, maybe a little 3 gun in the future. What do you think I should go with? What's your preference? Or should I go with something else for a 9mm. Thanks. Look forward to hearing what y'all think.

Personally I prefer the P226.

Best option though is to try and find a friend who has a Glock 17 and try theirs out to see if you like it. They're not bad, I'd like to get a Glock 34 one day even.

Another path you could take is a Strike One, similar to Glock but a nicer trigger I find. Or look into an HK or CZ pistol.

For me the p226 grip is too big and too wide for me. Also my thumb keeps pressing down on the slide stop. I think it's a great pistol. I just can't shoot well with it. I love my glock. But if I were to take competition seriously I wouldn't use a glock (maybe idpa ssp). For ipsc production division, cz shadow 2 and tanfoglio are my choices.

It would be best to try out a few different pistols to see what you shoot best with. The Cz shadow would be another excellent option and you can sometimes find one on here for 700ish.

Both the G17 and P226 are the gold standard in combat pistols. You can't go wrong with ether gun.

G17 pros
-price
-good reset and one constant 5.5lb trigger pull
-no manual safeties or decockers to worry about
-lots of after market support
-easy to adjust grip size "gen 4 and above"
-easy to work on for novice at home gunsmiths

Sig P226

Pros
-good SA trigger pull and excellent reset with SRT installed
-solid all metal feel
-Smooth DA pull
-more grip options if you pay for it

Now in saying that, the CZ might serve you better for you needs. So definitely have a look at afew SP01's and CZ75 shadows first.

Owned a 226 for years, bought a Glock 17 and sold them 226 a few weeks later and bought a Glock 19.

I don't think there's much better choice than a Glock 17 from your perspective. The M&P is a decent runner up, the p320 is an unsafe pistol, then HK SFP9 is a great gun but in typical HK fashion, mags are bloody expensive and replacement parts are like hens teeth. The HK USP is my favorite DA/SA gun but again, see HK issues. FN striker fired guns never seemed to woo me, other than the 45 tactical but that's a whole other breed of handgun.

Go Glock, I doubt you'll regret it.

I owned a P226 and a Glock 17 for a bit. 226 came first. I shot my Glock 17 way more. For me, the Glock grip works well. Now I own a Glock 19, fits even better.

If you're going to use it for competition, I'd probably lean more towards the Glock over the 226 unless you can master the long, heavy DA pull of the 226. After the first shot, I'd prefer the 226 SRT.

That said, if I was looking for a competition gun, I'd +1 on Dsiwy comment on the CZ75. :)

Of all the wonder 9 pistols, I find the 226 to have the worst geometry for modern high speed shooting games, and I have two of them and do like the guns.

They are incredibly well made, though I found the p220 single stack 9's to have a more comfortable grip.

The main issue is that you can't get your strong hand up as close to the bore axis as on a newer design like the Glock, m&p, etc. This means slower splits when shooting fast, as there is more torque on the wrist, and hence a bit more muzzle flip.

The Sig is still a great gun and well made. They tend to be accurate and are almost unbeatable in slow fire for a semi-auto 9.

But for idpa, IPSC, etc. I would look at a cz or modern polymer framed gun with a higher grip.

YMMV.

For the last 25 years I shoot P226 and as always never let me down, 100% reliable, accurate, works like a Swiss clock...unfortunately I never get along with the brick grip of so affordable and acclaimed "glock 17 supergun"...LOL !
My friendly advise keep your SIG Sauer P226 and never look back!

had a few glocks. once i shot a sig 226, i got rid of all the glocks and now am owning a 226,229, 320 and a sig 1911. glock trigger is ok, but nothing in glock line up can beat the sig trigger

I have a few higher end pistols but I always enjoy shooting my Glock 17. And once you master it, it is quite accurate too...

I vote Glock.

I had several Sigs and they are nice guns but more expensive and less reliable. P226 has one of the highest bore axis on the market VS one of lower bore axis (Glock). I ended up selling my Sigs and Mept my gen4 G17, CZ75 and Beretta 92.
