I've got an older Win Defender with a wooden forestock and a pistol grip. While this was the "sh*t," 20 years ago I want to give it a small makeover. IE collapseable butt maybe a nylon forestock to lighten it up a bit. While I like the pistol grip its not that practical as an animal self defence weapon. I dont mind it being a tad bit longer if I can swing it up into the shoulder before having to crank off a round.

ATI makes synthetic pistol gripped stocks for a Winchester Model 1200/1300. So does Knoxx. Epp's is an ATI dealer. The Shooting Edge sells Knoxx.
Personally I'd lose the pistol grip only.

I have built more than my share of "tactical" shotguns over the yrs, currently have 20 or so in the safe.

I have yet to come across a collapsable/folding stock that actually allows you to shoot practically well. They all afford making the shotty shorter and more packable and are arguably damn kewl looking but they don't shoot for ####.

Same goes for a pistolgrip. makes the shotty smaller and much more packable but is only practicall yeffective at conversation distance.
If it makes having the gun present when needed for defense purposes such as canoeing/fishing an dother cases where having the gun short and compact enough to both have with you and remain outa sight till needed then it is certainly worth the tradeoff in practical accuracy and shootability as the other option would be to not have it with you at all!

A conventional buttstock and or a pistolgrip full buttstock is the way to go if you want actual shootability and practical accuracy. The pistolgrip buttstock offers better one handed gun control when/if needed but IMO deosn't shoulder as readily from a slung or unhanded position. They also make the gun more cumbersome for packing and or scabbarding.

A short LOP conventional buttstock is IMO the best setup for a defensive and practical shooting shotgun.
If you really want/need the shortest package for packing/concealing and still want/need a practical shooting setup you can't beat a 12 or 14in pump with a short LOP conventional buttstock. This is as short as a pistolgripped full length gun and offers shootability with reaonable mag capacity.

When it comes down to reaching for a shotty in a hurry for real to stop a predator, regardless how many legs it has, I won't be fawkin' around with folding stocks/pistolgrips/lasers/red dots/picatinny rails..........

Now if the object of the game is fun and kewl factor....well then the world is yer' oyster and go nuts.....Nothing wrong with that.....that's what MOST of my guns are for! lol

OK, some good advice here. What do you'se all reccommend for new sights ? Ghost Ring ? rail with red-dot ? I've seen a scope mount system that attaches to the side of an 870 with a Weaver, or picatinny, mount on top. Do they make those for Winchesters ?

I just happen to have a Mesa Tactical High Tube Recoil stock assembly for the Winchester 1200/1300, complete with Enidine recoil shock and scope rail, 4 position buttstock w/recoil pad and Hogue pistol grip. This set-up is just like CAR-15 rifle and tames the recoil down to 20 gauge skeet level. Simple to install and super functional as well as cool lookin'. This set is as new and can be yours for $300. shipped. The Knoxx and others can't compare to this rig.
Perfect for mounting a red dot scope or holo-sight.
