NEF/H&R Handi-Rifle idea

To start with, I have never handled a Handi rifle, and am not overly familiar with any sport type rifles manufactured after the 1940's.

I would like to know if the 3006 handi rifle action is capable of accepting (with some fitting) a handi 12 gauge barrel? I like the idea of being able to carry a single gun with two barrels, one in 3006 and one in 12 gauge. Is this feasible, reasonable, even possible? I assume the same action is used, however the greater thrust of the 3006 leads me to suspect that something has to have been altered to make the gun capable of handling the more concentrated back thrust of the 3006.

This thread is about determining how close the rifle receivers made post yr 2000 designated SB-2 are to the SB-1 shotgun/rifle receivers, and thus, how likely it is that an SB-1 shotgun barrel could be mounted on the stronger SB-2 receiver. If there is a thread that deals with this somewhere I apologise, but I haven't found it yet. I am not interested in shipping back and forth to the states.

Edit: I found some info through the link Calum posted. Seems the frames are almost all the same and the difference is in tempering.

This theory that the frames are very similar in dimensions (but NOT THE SAME STRENGTH) comes from this link where a .223 barrel is attached to a shotgun receiver, causing the primer to fail and blow out rearwards along with the firing pin and some of the hammer. In this case the larger firing pin and pin hole are to blame, but illustrates the dangers of using a shotgun receiver for a rifle round with higher pressure:

All this is excepting the 10ga/12ga SB2-980 seems to be some sort of shotgun only hybrid. There isn't much info but it seems to be an offshoot meant to handle higher pressure/bigger/longer shotgun loads. I'm not at all sure though, as the post is poorly written.

A good discussion on determining the differences between the SB1 pistol/shotgun frames and SB2 large rifle frames:

After all this I'm still not totally sure how strait forward it is to put an SB1 12 gauge barrel onto an SB2 rifle receiver, but it looks like it isn't impossible.

if you check out the h r website, it tells you about having other barrels fitted to your action

You hav to send it back to the factory, unlike TC. But it can be done I have one in .243/20 gauge

That would require sending it to the states, and having them send an additional barrel back across the border which is no-go without a lot of paperwork, hence my curiosity if the frames are the same size and dimension between SB-2 post yr 2000 models and the SB-1 12 gauge models, and whether or not an SB-1 12 gauge barrel will fit the SB-2 rifle receiver with minor fitting. I was a bit worried the thread would derail because I provided excess info, hopefully someone can sound off with the details on dimensions.

H&R won't fit Rifle barrels other than 357mag and 44 mag on a shotgun frame since the shotgun frame is not heat treated to handle the pressure. Since rifle frames are heat treated investment cast alloy steel, they are safe to use higher pressures, the lower pressure shotgun barrels don't present a hazard to the firearm and/or user as the inverse does. The larger firing pin and surrounding hole in the frame is also an issue.

Haha - that's one heck of a thread.

From your quote I'm not sure if I was clear - I would like to mount a shotgun barrel onto a rifle frame, and have absolutely no prior experience with the guns to tell me if this is common or not, hence my asking what could be a stupid question. I'm well aware that the rifle frames can handle 12gauge pressure and thrust, but am not sure they are even the same frames or if they can be mounted with no, or minimal work.

I've got a Rossi single shot that came with a .308 and a 12G barrel. They also sell 3 packs with a .22lr barrel.

Your simple answer is "YES," you can fit a shotgun barrels to an SB2 rifle frame... I have Handi .223, .243, .308, Sportster 17 HMR and Pardner 12 gauge 3 1/2" turkey guns... the barrels ALL fit the same frames... I have interchanged them all, and they fit snug and tight... obviously the rimfire HMR does not function in the centerfire SB2 frame but the barrel fits fine... I checked because we are rechambering the HMR barrels to 17 Hornet...

Sometimes there is some fitting required, shimming the lug or relieving the lug and/or latch... all of ours fit with no problem... you should not fit a centerfire barrel to an SB1 shotgun frame however.

You can't buy a barrel from the factory without sending the gun in for fitting. The Gravelle Agency handles H&R in Canada, and they tell me that they CAN do barrel fitting... BUT H&R will NOT send them barrels any longer... "CATCH 22."

I would recommend that you simply buy a Pardner Shotgun and fit the barrel to the SB2 frame yourself... the shotgun is only $129... which is LESS than the barrel alone would cost you, if you had to send the gun in.

GBO (Grey Beard Forum) has an excellent sticky on barrel fitting in the H&R section.

You can fit a shotgun bbl to the rifle frame, but not vice versa.

The hard part is finding the barrel.

Check out the Rossi "Wizard" series. Thats probably exactly what you are looking for. Rossi also makes rifles with matched shotgun/rifle barrels aswell.

I have a 2010 manufactured SB2 chambered in 35 Whelen that I recently fitted a 22" 20 ga barrel to with no problems. Both barrels function very well and you only need to remove 1 screw to change the barrels.

Where did you get the barrel?
