I have been working hard to get him his first shotgun deer. He family doesn't hunt so I have been teaching him taking him out whenever I can. He got his license just over a year ago. Last season I got him his first deer (doe) and it was with a crossbow... This year he entered the control hunt. I have been taking him out hoping he gets his first shotgun deer.
I placed him in the best tree stand location I have on the property. He had seen deer on every outing but either he got busted or the shot was too far for his comfort zone. (which is good on his part for not taking the long shots).....but today a little before 7 am I hear his gun go off ( I am hunting 200 yds south of him).... about 10 seconds later I hear a second shot go off... I think that is not good.......
Turns out his first shot at 50 yds on a standing buck was a miss, (too excited/buck fever he later confessed to having the shakes). At the sound of the gun shot it just turned then started to slowly walk away. He then grabbed his new grunt call and just like we talked about, he grunted at it a couple of times causing it to stop and turn broadside...At this point he took the second shot and watched it run off.....
He was sure he hit it, I advised him to wait... He waited probably the longest full hour of his life before I allowed him to go look... it turns out the buck went only 30 yds or so after the hit.... excited guy for sure...
