Anyone here from Nelson BC? My brother is moving there in a couple of weeks fro school. Although he has not really hunted in a few years, he is interested, if time allows, to get back into it. (He has never big game hunted)

What is there to hunt in the area? Anyone here willing to take a guy under his wing?

Was from there

There are many excellent spots:
1) bull river
2) flathead
3) invermere
4) grandforks/Rock creek ( good for deer )
5) And right around Nelson

Haven't lived in the area for many years but reports coming back from family indicate good big game hunting. If my memory serves me right hunting involves 4X4's quads and or horses and major foot work to get to the better areas. Visit the local DNR for a start and look into draws. Sometimes you can get access to some huge Elk. There is also a flourishing wild turkey hunt in the province now.

I've lived in the Prairies for many years not and I don't miss walking those mountains one little bit. So good luck. One word of advice is that most guys who hunt are in pretty tight groups and don't readily share info. ( Can't stand that) One example is that my dad's Elk party took a vote as to whether or not I could hunt with them. I was seventeen. Left for The Prairies a couple of years later and never regretted it.

there is lot of oppurtunity in the east kootenay which is a 2 hour drive from nelson to cranbrook but once you get over the salmo creston pass your in heaven excellent muley whitetail and elk areas . steep mountains and rough terrain with big bush provides adequate cover and the hunting is very good . Roads are every where and finding a place wjth lots of animal sign in general puts you in good hunting oppurtinity . Check out the Kid creek and the Kama , Skully creek drainages around Kitchner and you will run into elk and deer without a problem also castlegar and Trail have lots of deer especially mule deer . Grand forks is a good bet to for deer . Elk in the west kootenays is on draw and if you are a b c resident you can apply for them and the elk are huge I harvest one that went 360 and my buddy took one that went 389 non typical anyhow with a little bit of snooping and talking to the local fish and wildlife you will soon fit in there GOOD LUCK AND HAPPY HUNTING

The East and West Kootenays are game heaven. Lots of Elk, Mulies and Whitetails, bears too. Cougars if you want. You need to go a ways farther north for moose unless you win in the draw.

PM Rick here on the board, he lives down near there I believe.

Make sure to avoid the smelly granola eating hippies there though...

I have lived in the area for 20 yrs now and the hunting here is some of the best I would say. Big Elk Nice white tails and some pretty big mulies.. the bears are everywhere and 4-18 has a 6+ elk season in oct ...so no worries about game here. Also the country is super too. IMO

  I don't blame you for leaving!! Sound's like his "partners" are a bunch of self-serving a$$holes  I couldn't imagine not bringing a kid if he/she wants to come along :D

I think he has to be a resident for a certain amount of time before he can hunt freely, Someone would need to fill out a hunter host application to take him hunting this year. It might be too late to get any paperwork through the system for this years hunt. Maybe a shot at late season hunts ?????

I know here on PEI if you relocate for work or School you are considered a resident. Not sure about any other province.... He would hunt by himself anyway in unfamiliar territory. Here on PEI we are used to hunting with no compass map etc as we are almost never more than a mile from a road.
