Agreed, a lot of negativity here, as if you all haven't done something that could have gone wrong. take it as a learning experience and keep the negativity out of it. i went for a hunt today, it was -20 at the warmest. Had I fallen and broken a leg or something things would be bad, as I'm at the cottage and pretty much on my own. Reality is if something went wrong I probably wouldn't survive. But I'm not going to sit inside just to be safe. If/when something goes wrong and I don't make it, I'm glad to know all you negative guys will be able to feel better about yourselves by posting the "never would have happened to me, he is a darwin award winner, etc".

The frigid weather can sneak up on anyone for that matter.
This reminded me of an article I read titled "The Day The Duck Hunters Died". This happened in 1940 in Mid-West US,where about 2oo people lost their lives to a freak snow storm, about 80 of them Duck Hunters.

Probably his age, and the fact that he made it after crawling a mile. It shows a will to live, a determination.
It's a feel good story for a change, because he made it out.

Easy to criticize an old timer that overstepped his capabilities. Getting old sucks. Closely examine your older relatives, and remember, some of them used to be bad sons of #####es. I might die the same way when I get old and tired of being treated like a worn out pos. I tell folks I want die way too old to be doing something crazy with something that has way too much power to be "safe". There are worse ways to go. All of our days will come to an end.

There are worse ways to go, sure, but there are better ways. This story is not so much about his overstepping his capabilities as much as it is about making rookie mistakes...no phone or way of communicating with others + no telling anyone where you are roughly heading off to X health issues = dumb way to die. No doubt he is a tough old bastard but he’s also a lucky one.

Let wife know location - sometimes but she has no clue where these places are and as I say "If you are worried call the boys they will know where I am or at least where to look"

Roll over and die if something happens - Nope not in my constitution, Brings to mind the 1.5 mile hobble/crawl up a creek, with a blown knee while checking muskrat traps when I was 13. Even then I knew no one knew where I was and my old man would not have carried me out if he found me. Pain, God's way of letting you know you are still alive
Keep on getting on with life until the number comes up and if it comes in the bush I would be thinking of all the friends and family that didn't get the chance to see a fraction of nature I have and passed in a sterile cubicle. - Hell Ya!!!

i have experienced blizzard conditions in the early 1970 era . a clear sunny morning turned into a blizzard within a half hour about eleven in the morning.all the preparation in the world would not have saved you if you had been out in that storm as visibility was zero. you could not see a man standing beside you.my own sister an uncle an aunt and a neighbour lady lost there way going two hydro poles distance. they actually crossed the road ending up in a field were they luckily came up a against a fence which they followed to a livestock barn.they very narrowly escaped death as other people did die in this blizzard.there is a lot more to this story that i am not telling you suffice to say my uncle who was an alcoholic never touched a drop of alcohol after that day. matches and heavy winter clothing would have been almost useless as the storm was so intense.good on the old fellow for making it back and yes he was poorly prepared but poor weather can close in brutally fast.

When I go to the local hockey facility (6 rinks) I can easily see which bleachers the family is sitting in.
When my daughter misplaced her phone, we could tell which room it was in.
And if I get lost in the bush, they could tell exactly where I was.

I just checked my phone. The app is called Find My Friends
It shows an icon (their initials or their picture) on a map. The amp can be zoomed in or out, depending on your needs.
Here is what it looks like. In this picture you can see that my friend is near the corner of two streets. If I zoomed in, I could tell what room the phone is in.

I guess they could have just stayed onboard. Apparently the crew made no announcement at all. Just blew the slide and that was it. Maybe they exited and left the people. A passenger apparently helped evac people. West jet sucks.
The only good thing about West Jet is that when no other carrier will land they will, safe or not, she's comin in, lol.
