I have reloaded for a number of years now and have seen some odd stuff in the component department when putting some rounds together but this is a first for me.
I was loading up a batch of 500 9mm's and on my third box of CCI Small Pistol Primers I noticed what seemed to be an odd primer. Upon closer examination it appears to be filled with primer compound but no anvil. Glad I noticed it before putting it in the primer tube. For sure there would be no joy from that primer. Think if I sent it to CCI they would send me another box? :confused::D:(

Weird. I would have never caught it because I slide open the box pressed down on my Dillion flip tray so that I don't have to shake it to get them facing the right way. So I never see them upside-down before filling my primer tubes.

Call 'em up and call it a safety issue. Maybe they'll send you a few bricks ;-)
 
You should don your Hazmat suit, get out a gallon of WD-40, soak the primer in the gallon of WD-40 for no less than 1 full week, after that you will have to drop it into a gallon of motor oil for another week, then into a bomb proof container and then, and only then, can it be safely disposed of. :nest::nest::nest:

Or you could just smash it with a hammer........ your call.

Uh, uhmmm, ok, CyaN1de. All that for an inert primer? :rolleyes:

It's not inert, it's defective. The priming compound is still there, so it still could go boom. Personally I would try it, on a last round of the day (in case of squib), just to see if it goes click or bang. It'll either work or it won't, I wouldn't be surprised either way. Call CCI, if they want to send you free stuff great, if they don't, load it and save it for the last round.
 
It will not work!
I have had a couple of these over the years, and they do not go boom.
I now make sure all my primers have an anvil before seating them.
It would be disconcerting to have that round go "click" when that trophy [insert whichever animal] is in your sights.

A couple of weeks ago I opened a box of Win Large Pistol and there was an extra anvil in there.

So I think there might be a Win Large Pistol primer out there somewhere with no anvil.
 
A free box or brick for a 3¢ primer? Man, some of you are pathetic......

I've had the opposite in the past: an anvil but no priming compound. Much harder to notice ahead of time....:(
 
almost looks like a Berdan primer. Do the other primers in the box have the same colour priming? does the metal cup appear to be the same size as a regular boxer primer? Berdan primers are usually a little shallower top to bottom. They are used in shells with integral anvils in the primer pocket
