New 10/22 build and advise

Hi Everyone,

I am new to the 10/22 and this will be my first build. My question is in regards to the following below. I have done some research on the site with the search function but have the following questions.

1. I am either interested in the Revival Explorer stock or the Hogue Overmoulded both for a bull barrel. What is everyone experience with either of these in regards to how they hold the action and can they take bedding ? especially the hogue as I do not want much barrel droop.

2. I was thinking of getting the GM 16'' fluted barrel and want to know hoe they shoot and compare to a longer barrel in either 18 " or 20 " in regards to balance if if its better to get a straight tube.

3. I also have a question in regards to getting either just a new hammer or a hammer and sear combination from VQ as well as a VQ trigger.

4. Do I need trigger and hammer bushings ? can someone explain how they work ?

I am trying to get this a accurate as I can but do not want to break the bank and can anyone suggest anything else that can really improve the accuracy ?Right now I do not want to get into cosmetic parts like charging handles and extended magazine releases.

This is going to be a hunting and plinking gun but I want it to have as much accuracy as possible without turning it into a full target bench gun.

1. The Hogue Overmold is a great stock. If you decide to bed it, you'll have to rough up the shiny areas. Install a VQ bedding kit and you won't have to worry about barrel droop. ###### also works.:p

2. I only had a 20" tube on mine and it shot great.

3. Definitely invest in a VQ hammer at the least. The sear is not completely necessary.

4. The bushings take out the side to side play in the trigger group. Never used them so I don't know what sort of effects, if any, they have on groups.

You should also pick up an aftermarket bolt buffer.

1. there are tons of good stocks out there. not familiar with the other but the hogue overmolded has good reports for a field gun
2. The fluting is both to reduce weight and promote faster cooling but to my mind they are mainly to reduce weight on a .22RF. If you're not using iron sights you dont need a longer barrel. I believe velocity wise a .22 RF barrel's optimum length is 14 inches. I personally prefer a barrel as short as possible when hunting to reduce tangling in the bush.

3. The hammer is most of it as 604 says but the sear is nice too.

4.the bushings do make a difference for me, tolerances vary on the
ruger receivers. the pull always feels the same after I put them on

one thing you can do is modify your bolt hold-open to release by pulling back and releasing the bolt only. The stock one is a PITA to operate and in my view is an accident waiting to happen. You don't have to buy a replacement you just have to recontour the hole in the stock one- rimfirecentral should have pics

The 10/22 Tips post at the top of the page has pics to show you what needs to be done to the bolt-hold open thing. If it's not clear enough rimfirecentral would have that and 10x more info.

hogue stock seems to get great reviews where ever you look. solid investment I'd say.
