I have just recieved a VERY cool gift - this Ruger.

I have seen some nifty modifications...anyone want to suggest some? I don't know very much at all about guns, but would enjoy seeing suggestions for modifications a novice could make.

Welcome AV!
Congrats on the gift...Very cool! :D
The very first thing I would recommend would be to learn how to take apart your whole gun and put it back together (trigger group internals and bolt also).
You'll need to know this for doing mods and the more you do it, the easier the mods are.
Have fun and if you get stuck...just post your problem.
There's LOTS of good people here to help you out.

WELCOME!!!!!! Also that is a great gun to get started with, too many people go larger center fire and miss the ease of a 22, price of amo, and they are pretty forgiving if you make a mistake while shooting or reassembly. Field strip her a couple times, oil the friction areas and shoot her to hell before modding it at all. I would suggest using the sights it has for a short while and then see if you want to put a scope on it.

New meat... LOL nice of you to stop by, read 10/22 Tips & Tricks it's a sticky at the top of the page it will help you get to understand your 10/22 and give you some future ideas. You now own a gun with endless thing to do to it. as well there are other forums that are dedicated to the rimfire like your gun you might want to check it out another great place for Ruger info.

Actually, my first gun (since I was a kid) was a 12 gauge 870 express with 2 barrells.
My second gun is a 700BDL and is a beautiful gun to shoot. I got it secondhand and really think I did better than one could doing it new. A gun enthusiast loved it for some time before I got it...lemme see if I have a photo handy...

I know it doesn't have any flashy stock or thumb-hole thingy, but trust me, it's even MORE beautiful when it is fired.

I was actually planning on keeping it open sights for awhile. If I do get a scope, I think it would be one of those little ones, with only one mount point. It seems that would help keep it more accurate. I can't true 2 rings together with the equipment available to me.

I am off to try out the new Ruger and maybe look for some small game. Please, everyone, feel free to post pictures of your modifications for this type of gun. (or direct me to such a thread)

Welcome aboard!
Leave it open sites is fun shooting.
mods suggested are in the sticky. personally, i did:
hone all parts mentioned
replace buffer to a tuffer buffer
trigger job: pick up a power custom hammer and adjustable sear
(it comes with extra springs)
banana mags x 2 if you want some fun
this is just a start.

X2 on the sling, yuk.

The only mod you should worry about right now would be to buy lots of ammo and getting in some trigger time. All the mods in the world won't take the place of practice. Have at er.
About the sling, it hung the thing off my back for todays walk. It could be better, I suppose, but it's what I have now. If you think I should have something prettier, go ahead and suggest it (preferably with information so I can price/purchase if I like it).

For now, I am just glad to have a sling, and think it was a lovely gift.

I like the way it shoots, by the way. It's a fun little gun.

I'm glad your enjoying your rifle. You can buy a sling swivel kit for your rifle. Uncle mikes makes them in several styles and none will break the $20 mark. A good sling shouldn't cost you anymore then $50, in either nylon or leather. Don't buy one of the fancy, stretchy type slings with shell loops and what not. Simple is better (and cheaper)

But here's a tip: Stop using a sling. They are handy for climbing or carrying other stuff, but most of the time a rifle on your shoulder is the worst place for it to be when you need a quick shot. They also get in the way when going through brush and hang up on every branch. I found now more often then not I prefer just to carry my rifles. Have fun with your new toy.

nice gun. i've had two different 10/22's over the last 35 years. the blued one
i sold about 13 years ago to buy a stainless. they are great guns.
iam running mine with a butler creek .920 barrel and a hogue over molded stock.
depending on the ammo you can cover a 10 shot group with a dime a 25 yards.

As I see it, this is the simplest, cheapest one available. If there is a better suggestion, I will really consider it.

For my 870 I don't/won't put a sling. Most often it is for camp protection, so it's place is in my hands (or my sweethearts'). I will consider doing the same with this one. I dragged through a bit of thick willows today and did notice the sling getting hung up a bit.

I don't know what a '.920 barrel' is, or an 'over molded stock' but I know what a dime looks like.
That's a lofty aspiration.

920 is the outside diameter of the heavy barrel he is running. I dunno about most people but I would shoot the heck outta that 10/22 before doing any mods and see if there are things that you don't like about it. I had mine for some time and only changed the buffer and new mags. A couple thousands raounds later and she is still stock other than a scope.
