So, I have been following CGN for a while now. Patiently waiting for my PAL/RPAL. Which arrived early Feb, and here is the first purchase, gophers beware.

Scope: Bushnell XLT Mildot 3x9x40
Ruger 10/22 Target

However, I noticed at home after the scope was mounted at the gun shop that the Butler Creek cover is in contact with the barrel. This was not the case at the shop, unless after some more adjustments it now contacts and I just did not notice. Will this cause any major issues?

It does create some pressure to open and close the cover. But will this affect the scopes perfomance/life span? Also, any way to spin the scope covers, because after adjusting it to my eye the cap now opens to being above the bolt. Any suggestions?

I have photos, except I cannot figure out how to post them. It says in my posting rules I cannot post attachments.

Thanks in advance.

You can adjust the caps Campbell.
Just spin the covers so the hinge is at the top of your scope.
OH..BTW...congrats on the first/new purchase!!
ALWAYS an exciting time... :D

Thanks Wham-O. Yea I noticed you can just spin them, so I took it off. Made sure it was still adjusted properly, then set it back on the way I wanted it. Thanks for the heads up. I just wrestled off the front cover, it had some serious pressure on the barrel. I will probably just get a different cover for this as it is maybe 1/8th to 1/16th of an inch off of the barrel (I didnt measure it).

Going shooting tomorrow, hoping to put around 2-300 rounds thru her. Should I use a barrel brush when I clean it? Or only wads and a snake?

You could always go a little higher on your rings and still use the BC covers?
Clean your barrel well before you start shooting today. (patch and solvent - dry patch)
If it's a "factory new" barrel, it'll have some oil or such coating in it.

When your done, just clean it with another solvent/patch then dry patch.

Have fun!!

Wham-O, Thanks for the heads up. I read and hear alot of conflicting ideas about cleaning the 10/22. I cleaned the barrel out with some patches/solvent, and then a little lube in a Hobbes kit I bought.

Utah, I will try that tonight when I get back from the range. I appreciate the reply!

I will let you know how the shooting goes.

I know what you mean Campbell...
It's a loaded question that everyone has an opinion on.
After a few years of owning firearms, you'll learn your own right/wrong ways of doing things.
It's called the learning curve.
All in good time.....

One small thing though (and again, my opinion...) I would not "lube" the barrel if you're going to be shooting the rifle. Lube it only when you're going to be storing it away for prolonged periods of time.

Wham-O thanks for the tips and advice, after a better read of the lube I have I will only lube it before storage. I will clean the barrel again tonight, then again in another 200 or so rounds. What is the general opinion on cleaning/lubricating the action? How often should I do this?

My attempts at photos has failed, I will now just post links.

I removed the front Butler Creek cover due to the space issues. I am now on the look out for a front cap, cloth or hard cover, to keep dust out.

In general I am happy with the performance at 40 yards. Took some time to sight it in, with plenty of help from a fellow at the range. I learned a great deal about sighting in my scopes and general shooting techniques. The accuracy I feel will come with lots more trigger time.

Damn! That is one nice looking rifle. Blueline has the exact same one (sans scope) and that Hogue grip feels amazing! It's been a tough exercise in restraint not to impulse-buy the thing. Looking forward to your range report.

Thats a dandy first rifle.

I would highly recommend the Volquartsen target hammer and extractor for your new build.

The factory trigger is pretty atrocious and many of the newer 10/22's have extraction problems.

Its money well spend I believe.

Thanks Bigbear. Yea the hogue stock is excellent. It provides plenty of grip even when my hands got a little sweaty. All the weight is in the barrel, even when in its carrying case you know which end is the barrel. It is, in my opinion, a perfectly balanced gun. On the heavier side yes (including bi-pod and scope), but it works.

And regarding the VQ trigger/extractor. I think I will wait, as for the 100-120 rounds I put through today, no FTE or FTF even, surprising since I was using Federal Bulk (was expecting at least one bad primer). Also before upgrading would like to know what a "bad" trigger feels like compared to a "good" trigger. The VQ stuff is what I look to upgrade to, but most likely in the coming years. My goal for this rifle is to teach me proper techniques and firearm care that will then transfer to the Browning X-Bolt in 30-06 that I plan to buy for fall.

I hope though, that I will progress quickly so I can justify purchasing them :D

Did that bipod come with the Target model?
Rifle looks awesome!

Btw, you can buy that VQ extractor for only 12 bucks (shipping included). Easy to install and WILL make a difference for sure - Cheap upgrade that does much to avoid the odd FTE.

Yes the bipod did come with the target model. It is a great addition, I can have it on and off in less than a minute, it is great.

I did not know the extractor was only 12$, I will look into that for sure, thanks. I am curious where I would find a larger charging handle for the rifle, a little small for my hands to grab at times.

I recently bought this one from rimfiresports.. they also sell extractors and just about everything else you need..

The standard `target` trigger is a joke and the Volquartsen partrs are ESSENTIAL if you want to get any sort of accuracy and pleasure from this rifle.!!
