New 1000 yard BR record -- five shots 1.4 inches!

Not sure about

I get the sense that he was running very high pressures, which I didn't think were generally conducive to top accuracy.

.

that. The 6PPC is the king of the hill in shortrange and it runs pressures in the 65,000 mark when running in the upper load window. Not to sure that the high pressures would have much to do with affecting accuracy. Case life yes.

When I was shooting 240gr MK's, I was using 93-94gr of H50BMG in my 300RUM so his 85gr of H1000 is about right. Pressures are certainly up there no doubt but if anything like my rifle, not insanely high. How long was his pipe?

Didn't see the gun specs but if he was shooting an unlimited gun, they can weigh a ton. A muzzle brake would really help tame the push too.

I bet he didn't use MK's straight out of the box and after all the sorting, trimming and mucking about, they are as good as custom. Some historical lots of these bullets have had up to 50% cull rate. A big reason that the 240gr MK was pulled from production for a while. I guess things have been sorted out.....maybe.

As for brass life, that is not surprising. He is likely running in the 70,000psi range which for a zero tolerance rig and strong brass means very long case life. It is not uncommon for a short range BR shooter to toss his barrel BEFORE his brass.

Most never see this because there is enough slop in the actions to allow cases to grow (all commercial solid front locking bolts have this problem). With resizing there is enormous strain on the case head/web and eventually things split. Also, all that slop allows a case head to stretch making the primer pockets too big.

I think we need to put Leepers words in perspective. This was a smoking, super amazing group but it is ONE GROUP. As was said, he has always been close but a shot out here and there has kept him from a record ( as it has for many top level shooters). Is he a good shot? does he have great gear? You bet but I expect the agg to be more inline with shooting in the 3/8 to 1/2 MOA range.

Somedays we all miss into the same group.

As for seeing your shots, the new MARCH scopes are supposed to be a huge step forward towards seeing large cal holes at 1000yds. They have worked well enough to see 6mm holes at 600yds under most conditions in the BLACK so they might just see a 30 or 338 holes out at 1000yds????

They are expensive but no more then the S&B's (actually less) and if they have that level of optical quality, a must have for group shooters. The last ingredient to getting groups in the 3's, maybe the 2's on a regular basis at 1000yds.

Shot one, drive the rest.

It seems that in LR BR, the way to shoot is to get the rds down range as quickly as possible to minimize condition shifting. Refered to as machine gunning or gunning, the top shooters can rattle off 10rds in as little as 25secs. There are youtube vids of them blasting away...unbelieveable.

The rests and gear used are so well engineered that the gun is really a rail gun without the rails. BRING MONEY!!!!

If a shooter spends enough time in the accuracy game, great groups will happen. I have shot a few hummers with my 6.5 mystic and 7RM which has been very exciting. Do it all the time? I wish...

Geeeeez, what a baby had to use a scope...I could do that with iron sights!! Any of you buying this...? :D

Seriously, that guy is one hell of a shot!

The guy had a great day and so have many of us at 1000yds at one point or another. It's nice to see when they get recorded and credit given and I always appreciate a fine 1000yds group. Not easy to obtain.

Like B. Leeper said, there was a follow up group of 6". That's still an excellent group at that range, but too many variables are present at extreme ranges.

1000yds shooting is very challenging and I love it the most especially in F-Class and if you practice/compete in it long enough, you'll have a good day too where all the shots will just go where you put them and you'll be smiling that day.

that is a great group, holy cow
the only drawback is all the armchair shooters will now be able to justify their internet prowess like that time they shot a 1/10 inch 10 shot group at 500 yards with their dads cooey....

That is a great group; I wish I could have shot it. On my makeshift range the winds are just to inconsistent at the 1000 yard mark to do better than 6” or 8” consistently. My rifle is capable of shooting in the .1 range at 100yards and carrying that level of accuracy through a few hundred yards but after that the winds cause the dispersion. No harnessing mother nature. The guy deserves credit, he must have shot one pile of lead, have great wind reading skills to end up producing that group. Some day I hope to copy it!

I do lots of long range shooting...with tracers...farther than that.... never at paper. We just have a spotter with bino's telling us if we hit the mark. Usually something bigger than a paper target. Tree, rock, whatever. I'd be curious to know if I would even be able to hit the target at that range. I only have a 24x scope. One of these days I'm gonna use the GPS and measure 1000m and grab a sheet of plywood and some spraypaint...

OUCHOUCH

I sure hope they had brakes on that thing.

Was looking at a post for an unofficial record group shot during practise. 10Shots a bit bigger then this record group. 9 shots was in the Xring less then 2" with the 10th just out pushing to a little over 2"

Amazing accuracy.

If you have an accurate rifle and can catch some clean air, shooting small groups at LR is possible. But a little oops and your groups goes south right now.

Sometimes you just get lucky...

WOW thats definatly very impressive.

That guy must have one hellva steady iron hand and no heartbeat. That guys is a Zombie!!

Awsome article

Cheers

I would think that being in such good shape helps out a bit. His heartrate at rest would be significantly lower than your average armchair sniper with a beer gut.
