Just got a new 243 win, I was wondering what kind of critters people have used there 243 to assault. It is a versetile cartridge, anything from moose to gophers, or is it limited.

My dad has shot alot of moose with his 243. You don't need a canon you just need to know how to shoot. As for shooting gophers its alot of fun just a little expensive. Most gophers create a red mist and seem to disintegrate.

While the 243 will kill moose with careful shot placement, it is not a chambering that I can recommend to take moose hunting. It shines from varmints up to and including Deer size game. I have shot a fair bit of game with a 6mm, which is very similar. Never any issues. Regards, Eagleye.

If I'm deer hunting, I'd rather be carrying my .243 :) I've bagged more than a few Whitetails with it, and none required a second shot.

The .243 has been used successfully for moose and elk. Personally it would not be my choice because it does not meet the criteria of having a reasonable expectation of being able to kill those animals with a single shot from any angle within the range limitations of the cartridge and shooter. I think the .243 is suitable for game with a maximum weight of 100 pounds, but there will be those who will disagree, and who have the experience to back it up.

Normally a shooter will ask those questions and determine their hunting stituation needs BEFORE buying a new rifle.

I bought my 243 with predator hunting in mind yote and wolf with the option to shoot deer if I saw one during/in season.
I would not shoot a moose or black bear with 243. I use 270.
I'm sure some others will say 270win is too small but to each their own. Hunt with whatever you like, however you like as long as it's both legal where you live and you are comfortable doing it.

Great deer calibre. I have a 243 and 6mm, both are great. When hunting big game you need to select the proper bullet. I generally stick with 100 grn bullets for deer but may try 85 gr Barnes X this year.

Light varmint bullets on deer will probably not give you a very pretty ending.

I too have a .243 and a 6mm and have taken deer and black bear with it using factory 100gr. Winchester and Federal bullets. Bang-flop on everything.

Interesting replies ... ;)

p.s. I never should have sold my Ruger MKII M77 .243 as she was a straight shooter :D

I've shot a pile of deer with a 243 out to 200 yards with 100 grain bullets. I would not go lighter. Also shot even more groundhogs with lighter bullets. I've got 5 243's.

One of my all time favourites! The 243 is very verstile, but it would not be my first choice for anything bigger than deer or bear. If it was all I had and I was staving and bullwinkle was standing out there at 100 yards, I would be shooting! But if I am going on a planned moose hunt I would be taking a 7mm or a 30 caliber. Use common sense and dont surpass the limitations the cartridge was designed for and you will not be disappointed!

Probably the best long range coyote cartridge out there, with 70 gr Nosler BT @ 3500 fps. Much better in the wind that the 22-250 or 220 Swift. Also works on deer sized game at normal ranges. Great cartridge
