New 30-30

John Y- Get a MAC like I did- been months and no viruses!!

Taku- Mine doens't feed or eject so good. Bullet oftenends up ramming into the side ofthe chamber, although I htinkthat could be a mag thing- beinterested to see wat spire point bulets do, though!!

Sharpset- No idea what velocities I ma get- but I an guarrantee you that a 130gr TSX will have more whollop than a 170gr soft point- if the velocity manages sure expansion- and since my ests wiht other TSX bullets indicate they will expand ASAP, I htink ti will be a winner!!

Coyote- As far as I am concerned, tere is no reason at all to rechamber this to a 30-30 improved. Must less expensive/easier for loading to buy a 30-06 or 308 rifle. I could see rechambering to a 30-30 improved ina lever gun, but even that is iffy in these days of BLR's etc....

What I want to do wiht this rifle is to use it as a truck gun- wiht 2 loads.

One load-130gr TSX. Fast enough and lots of killing ooomph for the occasioanl bear/deer.

2nd load- Low velocity- maybe even subsonic- for "kinda close to houses" shooting at yotes etc.

I keep reading Suputins stuff about sub sonic 7.62x39 loads, and they are very intriguing, especially the low noise/recoil aspect .....to nail yotes sniffing around my livestock while I shoot out the window, without telling the girl to plug her earsd!:p

Trailboss powder seems to be able to provide subsonic 30-30 loads without the hassle, so this process may (or may not) be getting simpler!:)

Good choice on the computer. :D

Well if it's a truck gun, I take it the girlfriend has you sleeping in the truck these days? :p

Of course, I relaized that I had given away my 30-30 dies a fw years ago..So I have some Redding dies on order. Meanwhile I *gasp* bought some factory ammo.

You gave them to me ya big lug, you should have let me know about this I would have returned them! :runaway:

What appears to happen is the nose of the bullet doesn't line up perfectly wiht the chamber, and jams against the area around the feed ramp (there doens't appear to be much of a feed ramp, but I dont' knwo what else to call it:p )

Perhaps the lips you mentiuon are the answer- a bit of bending shoudl move the direction the cartridge is pointing?

I have yet to try it with pointy bullets, though, which may help!:)

I picked up a CIL 30-30 bolt action recently
ROTFLMAO, thanks, I needed that laugh. Too funny.
It's always nice to see someone buy a rifle that makes a 710 look good

By the by, consider a barrel swap, to a 338-30......

It appears that this rifle has been well used, however the bolt handle does not fall off, the factory ammo wil chamber, it does not lock up the bolt, the bolt does not fall out when you go to reload....All of which DOES happen ot the 710.

Actually, I have many times considered playing with the 340.
But, the sight of it... well....

If the rifle shoots well, try 165 BT's My limited trials with these as single loaders in my lever guns has shown great promise. They should shoot almost as flat as a 243Win (that should get Bartells attention) out to 300 yards, and deliver a hell of a lot more punch.

The rifle is reliable enough that it was issued as a survival rifle in hornet to the air force in for a while.
Nothing wrong with it except it's a tad ugly!

I have a friend with two, one in 22Rem and one in 30/30.
he's trapped with them for over 30 years , shot a zilliion things with them , and will not replce them with anyhting.
But then, he's not a gun nut, he looks at them the same way he does his Johnson outboard.
Of course, he wouldn't have a Merc on the back of his boat, mind you!:D

Nice refinishing job!

When I was 14 I shot my first deer with one those rifles, open sights. The rear sight on those rifles aren't the sturdiest around, I had to hold it where I thought center was before shooting the buck. lol.

Ahhh, you always remember your first.

I have quite a few cast bullets Gatehouse :) but not in 30 cal yet unfortunately :( I've been really happy with the folks/service/product at the bullet barn. I was eyeing some some 200 gr. roundnose in .309 from there, wich I want to try in 30-30 one of these days...

Don't let people tease you too much about this one Clark. I had one years ago and sold it.
I recently got a near complete one, missing the barrel. Found a new barrel stateside, put it on, and found that I actually like it. It'll make a great rifle for the truck, travelling the backroads to and from work.
