new 308, what powder?

I just got a new SPS in 308, I'm not a new reloader, just new to 308. What powders are my best bet? I want to load accurate rounds I can hunt with. Thanks for now.

For temperature stability: Varget

For no holds barred speed with heavy bullets (bit of temp drift ok): N550

I can only speak from my personal experience.

My best .308 load for my gun is 46 grains of Varget under a 155 Sierra Palma. It shoots under a 1/2" at 100 yards if I do my job.

If you choose to go the Varget route, start low and work up.

Only speaking from my own experience and load development in many 308s

Short barrels I use BLC-2
24-26 inch barrels Varget

I use 48gr of W748 and it pushes sierra 150grs at 2910 fps. Very accurate in my rifle too. I've also used IMR4895 and H380 with good results.

Thanks for the info guys. I'll be picking up some varget, and RL 15. I have some BLC-2, ww748 and 4895 already, so I can start loading once I mount my scope.

Varget is a good base powder for most if not all .308 length rifle cartridges, if I am not mistaken...

I have not tried Varget yet, but have been using H-4350, H-4831 and Winchester 748 these seem to do well in my Pre 64 308 Winchester.

Whooo fella...What kind of rifle are you using? Bolt? Semi? These take different types of powders for ideal results.

I think you get the point, but yeh.....varget. Can't go wrong. It is really the one component you can bank on. There are other greats but this is a smart place to start.

You might want to pick up a copy of the December 2008 issue of 'Handloader'
There is an excellent article comparing various components for the 308.
He found Varget worked so well, he didn't bother doing the powder test, and used Varget throughout.

IMR4064 is another good .308 powder. The cartridge likes 165 grain hunting buulets too.
