new 308, what powder?



I've been reloading RL-17 for a few months now in my 308. Its good with heavy bullets, but is not the fastest. N550 kicks the #### out of it in terms of achievable velocity (and group size) in my 308. However, I will probably be sticking with it since N550 doesn't have that great of temperature stability. RL-17 is only giving me marginal velocity over Varget with 190 SMKs, but it also groups a bit better.

jamiejaf Whooo fella...What kind of rifle are you using? Bolt? Semi? These take different types of powders for ideal results.

Why would it make a difference? I eventually plan to reload for my Norinco M-14. I got the impression that 150gr bullets were best for hunting.

Because the gas system on an M-14 is only tolerant to powders between certain burn rates. If you go out of that range, you may damage your rifle.
