actually the 338f is an improvement because it fits in a short action rifle and burns about 25% less powder.
2500 fps with a 225gr bullet this morning in the 358IMP, with both H4895 and RL15. BC .484

Did you confirm those velocities over your chronograph?
338F 225gr Accubond @ 2500 fps
+2" @ 100y, -10.5" @ 300y, -28.5" @ 400y
400y velocity = 1950 fps, energy = 1900 ft lbs
358 Win 225gr Accubond @ 2500 fps
+2" @ 100y, -11.5" @ 300y, -31" @ 400y
400y velocity = 1800 fps, energy = 1625 ft lbs
Just a fun comparision to see how close the two are:
.338F 225gr. Accubond @1950fps = TKO 21.19
.358W 225gr. Accubond @1800fps = TKO 20.71
A difference of TKO 0.48 which is the equivelent of a high powered .22 air rifle at the muzzle, a 2.5% "improvement" over the .358Win, not even worth comparing. The .338 can't however compete when you start comparing with heavier bullets as they exceed OAL.
No contest win to the .358Win.

Will post when I've finished sorting out my Frontier over the next few months. I won't get published data as it's only a 16 1/2" barrel though, so on that score I'll have to concede to TB's .338 Light
I've shot the 250gr Hornady round nose in the Sako 85 338f to 2325 fps. Haven't tried it yet with the Ruger, will do so later this summer if I get time. I also have some 250gr Interlock spire points which I could try too, just for kicks. They will fit fine in 338f, same ogive profile as the 200gr Interlocks...just gonna take up more powder capacity. Although not something I would hunt with, a 250gr spitzer @ 2250 fps out of a 338f should perform nicely on game at moderate distances. Expansion should be no problem out to 350 yards depending on the bullet choosen
Nosler doesn't even list 250gr data for the 358 Win because it's so patheticly marginal. Contest win? LOL
I think that's something to watch with both the .338L and .358W. Most of the heavier weighted bullets are designed for larger capacity cartridges and performance at higher velocity. This may limit their use in the shorter chamberings to shorter distances. So as it is every fps is needed, seating deeper for the longer heavier bullets is a solution but you're only further hampering their performance, and as it is the .338L is struggling to show it's worth.
