New 454 casull puma

hey all

I just picked up a 20" Puma in 454 casull. This will be a a gun that i plink with using some 45LC rounds but i also want to carry it on my back while fishing in big bear territory ( the rocky mountains ). I have a friend that will do all the reloading i want and was wondering whats the best combination i should be loading into this little monster. Thanks for all the replies. Cheers.

I have Northman999 mold from Accurate molds, you may want to contact Northman999 for his take on the mold, it is a 340grain wfn gc....Ben
 
I shoot from 200gr - 345gr 45 Colt loads and from 240gr XTP-Mags up to Beartooth 405gr WLNGC's loads in my M92 and everything feeds/fires perfectly...

H110 & Lil-Gun are my powders of choice for both 45 Colt and 454 Casull loads.

Jae-Bok Young makes .452" 420gr WLNGC's and I believe he still ships into Canada.

If someone wants to dig I posted a full range/load data/velocity report a couple years ago on my Puma M92 454 Casull rifle.

I just had a look and I'm cringing at the price. $25/50 plus shipping to the Yukon from the states = ow. A custom mold is looking more and more tempting so long as I can track down a source of lead alloying material that will not also make me cringe. I might do this anyway as it would be nice to have a double crimp groove designed to seat a bullet further out in a 45 colt case and allow for higher powder charges in the smaller casing.

I feel your pain. Been looking into casting for a while now things like this are making it look much more appealing. Sems like a pretty frustrating and costly endeavour for beginners though.

I'm actually in the process of getting into casting. Compared to a reloading set up casting is dirt cheap as most of the set up can be scavenged if one wants to(I just got a few easy things for free). A turkey cooker is highly recommended for recycling lead into bricks. Hardest part is proving to be sourcing lead as most tire shops only give it to a 'certified recycler'. If you have access to a good scrap yard it might be easier as well.

I'm doubtful of my application as I just started a new job at a mine site. Damned if I'm still not going to try though as I still intend to be prospecting on my own. That being said I need the gun to even try and get it.
 
I basically purchased a life time supply when it was still fairly inexpensive to buy/ship direct from Cast Performance/Beartooth/Jae-Bok Young...

Yes the following was part of my original post that I referred to in the earlier link that was posted and I load the 405gr Beartooth with 22.5grs Lil-Gun.

Here are a few velocities in fps that I get with some of my different 454 Casull loads in my s/s 20" barreled LSI Puma M92.

240gr XTP-Mag 38grs H110 1) 2258 2) 2327 3) 2316

300gr XTP-Mag 30grs H110 1) 1858 2) 1821

300gr Speer Gold Dot 31grs H110 1) 1890 2) 1897

360gr C/P WLNGC’s 27grs Lil-gun 1) 1848 2) 1846 3) 1828

395gr C/P WLNGC’s 24grs Lil-Gun 1) 1647 2) 1642 3) 1650

I went to Beartooth bullets site and used their ballistics calculator.

Here are the results for the Puma rifle.

240gr = 2820 ft-lbs 36 TKO 154 TSP
300gr = 2305 ft-lbs 36 TKO 156 TSP
360gr = 2737 ft-lbs 43 TKO 185 TSP
395gr = 2388 ft-lbs 42 TKO 182 TSP

Foot-Pounds of energy (ft-lbs) eg; 30-06 180gr bullet 2700fps = 2914

Taylor Knock Out Scale (TKO) eg; 30-06 180gr bullet 2700fps = 21

Thornly Stopping Power Scale eg; 30-06 180gr 2700fps = 109

Example of TSP scale
