Action screws

Howdy d4dave1 ;-)

When I bedded my m96, I went looking for longer action bolts and I finally figured they are M7 screws, which none of the hardware stores carry.

You should put an foreend tip on that stock

Hey there HF,
Thanks for the howdy. So that foreend tip, should it be African Black Walnut?
Damn, I wish I had the woodworking skill of some guys that post pics of their work! Fortunately I have a wife that is a cabinetmaker so I think maybe I can make a trade.

So a long overdue update to this thread.

I have my Swedish Mauser Sporter assembled and functioning. Ordered a Timney trigger and installed it on the rifle then put the metal to bed inside a brand new Boyd's Classic stock in walnut. The stock was definitely NOT a drop in just in case anyone is considering putting a Boyd's stock on a Mauser. No complaints from me as Boyd's was upfront about there being required woodwork. My guess would be a "moderate" amount of woodwork required to set the action into the stock. I had to cut the complete bolt handle groove into the stock as well. A Dremel tool made the work easy and a large dollop of patience was required. Grind a little, check fit, grind a little, check fit, repeat ad nauseum.

It had been suggested to me AFTER I was finished to try shoe polish to mark the rub spots on the stock so a person knows where to grind a bit more. That could work...

There was a tricky bit of grinding around the trigger assembly to get the Timney trigger to fit and function properly. Very hard to describe but some patience and careful looking is required to get it right. The shoe polish trick would have helped a lot here.

I don't have the final finish on the stock yet because I am debating whether to go with a Min Wax oil finish or a urethane finish.

The project was great fun, I learned a lot and had some help from a bunch of people. Thanks go to Tony and Anthony at TradeEx!
I enjoyed this project so much that I ordered two more from them for next winters project! Not sure if I will go with another Timney trigger or the Bold trigger assembly from Boyd's on the next builds???
Regards,
Dave.

I'm in the middle of a M96 project myself and I've been having a difficult time finding an after market sporter shroud like the one that came with your rifle. Do you know if all the " kits" from tradex come with them?

Brownells haven't had them in stock for over a year now, and I'm about to weld the safety tunnel closed on the original shroud, then modify it but I would sure prefer to just purchase one.

I love the swedes and have three right now, all of them great shooters. Post a pic when you have it completed!

I bought the barrelled action from TradeEx off of this page:

http://www.tradeexcanada.com/produits/85

You can get either slick barrels or barrels with iron sights. The slick barrels are drilled and tapped and I think the iron sighted barrels are as well.

Then after I mis-ordered some unneeded parts someone advised me to phone Anthony at TradeEx and talk to him. Why is it the simple stuff always seems to allude me?...lol

TradeEx has complete sporter bolts ready to go for the barrelled actions. They are on this page:

http://www.tradeexcanada.com/parts/42

None of what I ordered is listed as a kit per se except the barrelled actions come together. Everything else you have to order piece by piece right down to the action screws.

I have had some good feedback on the Bold triggers so I think I will try a couple of them in my next builds. No complaint with the Timney trigger at all, it works very well.

So far the projects have been a lot of fun but if I keep doing them at some point I am going to have to start either selling some or giving them away as presents....lol

Phoning either Anthony or Tony is GREAT but be prepared to talk about all kinds of "gun stuff" and hunting stories. Tony educated me all about the 9.3x57 and we talked about hunting in Africa.

I will be sure to post some finished pictures when I am done. Although posting pictures on this forum is a royal pain in the keester compared to other forums.

Hope that helps a bit.
Regards,
Dave.

PS. I am looking for a Mauser 98 in 7x57, preferably with a sporter bolt, as a project rifle if anyone has one for sale. Wood can be rough to non-existent but would like the metal to be in good shape.

I'll call and chat him up for sure. I have one of each ( bold and timney) triggers in my rifles and can't say I favour one over the other. Tinkering is always fun and I'm looking forward to seeing your finished product.

Mine is a bit of an anomallly. My dad decided he wanted a lightweight M96 and cut about 3/8 th of an inch out of the box magazine of a swede and cut the stock down to match but never got around to finishing it. I just have to clean up a few sharp edges, shorten the trigger, then coat and assemble. I've put a bold trigger with side safety on this one so want to streamline the bolt shroud a bit.

The barrel was cut down ( way down) so I sure hope I can find a load that shoots ok.

That is too cool because I have been chasing that same idea around in my brain for a while. I REALLY like the idea of a small, lightweight, short, lower recoil rifle and was thinking of how to make one from a Mauser 96 in 6.5x55. I am also completing a project started by my father but it will be a short, light Lee Enfield in .303 however I do not expect it will much of a lighweight in the recoil department.

There are a couple of manufacturers of lightweights such as the Browning Micro and the Ruger American compact but none of them are available in 6.5.

Please post some pictures of your M96 when you get it done as I would like to see it. I can see a M96 "carbine" build in my future...lol
Regards,
Dave.

LOL...ok jonh172 I will have a go at loading some pictures.
Regards,
Dave.

This is Boyd's picture of the raw stock.

This is the assembled unit but unfinished stock. I learned some lessons doing this and one is when I was doing all the grinding and fitting of the wood and handling the metal for fit I ended up leaving finger prints all over the wood. Not sure how to prevent this without wearing gloves and constantly putting them on and removing them between steps?

Shortly after I ordered this stock frpm Boyd's the rules changed about the $100 dollar limit and was increased to $500. I would have added some other options to the stock if I could have done that.

This is how some of the parts looked upon arrival. Note the unnecessary parts for the bolt that I ordered. I also ordered the little sporter stock just because it was inexpensive and I thought I might use it down the road for a carbine project. It did take me a while to cipher out what parts I needed to complete my build such as the action screws etc.

This is the sporter bolt that T.E.C. has available for the barrelled actions in 6.5x55

One other lesson I learned is that when you are tired of fitting the stock....take a break! Not sure if you can see them in the pictures but I had a couple of small run-aways with the Dremel tool that left some scars on the stock. You might be able to see them around the bolt handle notch. I am hoping they will sand out during my final sanding prep before the finish coats.
Regards,
Dave.

OMG it is difficult posting pics on this forum! So much easier on a few other forums that I inhabit.

I am doing the same project as you .
I got a Swedish 96 barreled action( a heavy barreled 29" Shultz & Larson) from a member here) and a CG63 stock from Tradex .
I steamed out many dents and put on an armour all and TrueOil finish on... it looks very good ... few more coats should do it .
I ordered a cocking piece from Tradex....but the minimum order is $25 .....so I'm trying to figure what else I could use.....
Would you consider selling one of yours or are you saving them for the next project ?
I have to order a trigger assembly from Boyds also because my action has an elongated trigger slot (for some reason).....so the regular trigger won't . Let us know how yours works .
BTW nice job so far........fun eh .
I'm hoping mine will turn out to be a dandy "bean field rifle"

Post up some pics of your project if you can as I would like to see what you have done as well.

If you mean the cocking pieces in the picture below the aluminum tubes I would be more than happy to sell one or both to you. When I ordered my barrelled actions I also ordered the complete sporter bolt to go with them so I have no need for the original style cocking pieces. PM me your address and I will drop them in the mail.

I had to very slightly lengthen the trigger slot in my M96 to fit the Timney trigger. I just used a file and very carefully removed a small bit of material at a time until it fit properly. Not sure if the Bold trigger from Boyd's will require a slightly longer trigger slot as well??

My son in law is trying to talk me into bedding and pillaring this rifle for accuracy puposes. I am still waffling on the idea only because I would like to get it finished so that I can SHOOT IT!!!!...........lol

I am not sure if there are many other people out there that would enjoy basically "assembling" their own rifle but I sure did enjoy it. Perhaps there is a market for "build your own" kits from different manufacturers??
Regards,
Dave.

The 2nd picture is of the long slot in my Swede(top)...The short slot is normal sized slot .
The first picture is my buggered up cocking piece....some one got overly ambitious with a file .
The cut-in-half pipe is some one's attempt at making a faster acting firing pin...it was inserted on the firing pin assembly ahead of the spring....pretty good if it had worked .

I'm going to pillar bed my 96 using the threaded section of a lamp fixture as the post for the rear bolt .
I read somewhere on GunNutz that the Magazine section shouldn't touch the rest of the receiver....should be a space of a sixteenth of an inch .
The magazine section of the stock that I'm working on has been bedded for a tight fit with the mag....so I'll have to heat that up & scape it away... apparently the only thing touching the stock would be about 2 inches of the barrel ahead of the receiver, the back of the recoil lug and the top tang (or is it the trigger tang....gotta check)

The action d4dave1 have is a commercially reworked bolt / action. These are pretty neet with a very short lock time. Those having the longer sear slot are intended to be used with a Match aftermarket trigger.

Is the receiver marled as a CG63 (or CG80)?

There are plenty of aftermarket triggers. The altered (butchered) cocking piece was for use with one of the Swedes aftermarket triggers developped for the CG63/80. These can be obtained here but it's expensive and a lot of trouble.
There were two approved replacement triggers for the CG target rifles; One was Schultz & Larsen Model 69 (unmarked and looks much like a Sako trigger) and the Kongsberg (marked KV on the trigger). My bet is that the mods were made to work with one of those.

The mods perfromed on the cocking piece are pretty common on the Target rifles, check here;
http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?61386-Swedish-Mauser-bolt-modifications-shorten-lock-time

Removing weight on the cocking piece and using a preloaded or a stiffer spring together with the shorter stroke the modified cocking piece allows makes lock time much faster.

As for amrican triggers, Timney have several that fits, Dayton Traister also makes some, Huber concept is also quite good and there are others, too.

As Baribal said the bolt I have is a commercial reworked bolt and action and I am very pleased with them.

I bought a Timney trigger for my build and it has worked very well. They have two options, with or without a safety.

I did some asking around about the Bold trigger assembly from Boyd's and over all they seem to be getting good reviews. They are a fraction of the cost of a Timney trigger so I think I will try one for my next build. These are also available with/without a safety.

As I mentioned I enjoyed building my first M96 so much that I bought two more. I will play around with different stocks and finishes and see how they turn out. With summer here I will be busy farming so the projects will probably collect dust until next fall unless we get a rainy spell then I can tinker in the shop.
Regards,
Dave.

Thanks Baribal....that explains a lot .
I'm gonna go back to the original cocking piece on my project.....maybe cut off the thumb projection for aesthetic reasons and also lighten the firing pin slightly.
Will probably order the Bold trigger from Boyd's.
I had no trouble getting sub-minute groups with a long barreled Swedish 96 that I slightly bubbadized years ago (SIGH)
Dave look up "Woodstocks amazin' Stock Finish" ....it's truly amazing.
I don't have to farm but will put in a nice garden again once the snow disappears (snowing a bit this morning). I gotta put up my winters firewood soon (next week).I burnt 7 cords of mostly Birch this past winter(-42 a couple of times)
