Ok, so a new 870P with rifle sights just arrived .... got it out of the package, and took it apart ... and started cleaning the barrel ... here the result:

2017-01-10%2019.26.17.jpg

There is this thick black/dark grey smear coming out of the barrel ... one patch after the other .... as if the gun had been shot with lead slugs ... and not just one slug ... but many.

Here my question: is this normal? Can anybody explain this to me?
I mean this is a brand new and out of the box gun.

?????

Yeah, I'd contact the dealer. That doesn't look right ..

Or..... spray it with a bunch of Simple Green and hose it down. Lightly oil it and shoot er. I'm sure it functions fine.

^that would be my advice if you paid $300 for the thing. Since you likely paid about 2-1/2x that much...I'd stop everything, and contact the dealer asap. They just don't look like that new (all greasy) nor is that that much crud in the barrel.

What has the seller ( gunstore ) said about this gun ?
It has been Seven days and not much to back up the claims of such a dirty gun.
I had a sweet Browning Gold with Grade III wood and Gold hilights on the scrolling etc...
When it came to me it was covered in G-96 as was the clear plastic wrap in the box from the guy I bought it from.
I sold it a year or so later and sprayed it with another gun lube/protectant before closing up the box.
This was an expensive ( to me ) $1200.00 shot gun that served its intended purpose.
No complaints from the guy who bought it from me and he sold it a couple years later for same as I sold it to him for.
Was the chamber dirty and the barrel filhy... no idea, but i did clean it and sprayed it heavily for shipping.

Ok, today I got an email back from the dealer.

First, I need to clarify something ... the picture was taken after I cleaned the gun and oiled it ... so all that oil on the gun is from me and has nothing to do with the smear coming out of the barrel. That is just how I clean my guns ... they get coated in oil ... and then I wipe the surface oil off before they go back into the gun cabinet. I just wanted to clarify this.

About the smear coming out of the barrel. The dealer confirmed with Remington that the gun is actually a brand new and unused gun. However, no answer yet with respect to the smear ... dealer is waiting for an answer from Remington.

The smear that is coming out of the barrel is lead deposits ... I am 90% sure of that. I have another 870P where the barrel was not polished at the factory. I could feel the tool markings with my little finger inside the barrel. When I sighted that gun in with slugs ... and after having shot maybe 20 slugs through it ... that sort of smear was coming out of it. Exactly the same smear. I had to take a drill and some steel wool to polish the barrel myself. And that is probably what I am going to do with this new barrel/gun in order to clean it and polish the barrel ...

If I get any more information from the dealer I will post it here ...

p.s.: I know that barrels get pressure tested at factory ... does anybody know how manufacturers do this? Would they shoot slugs through a barrel?

I have commented already, but you go to further add to your worries or concerns.
My Wby Vangards have been fired from factory to test (QC) for accuracy.( have owned 6 )
My CZ's used to be factory tested for accuracy now they are test fired for function and accuracy is more than acceptable.
My TNW ASR came with two fired 9mm rounds.

Never once was I worried that the gun has had the barrel shot out in any of the above situations.
Oh and Shotgun shells are notoriously dirty when fired and the gun gets even dirtier the more rounds you put through it.
Fact of life guns get dirty from use and Brand New Guns from the manufacturer might be test fired and thus are dirty guns.. they are not used guns .
Tight Groups and Dirty Barrels,
