Needing to dial down after the first(?) shot at 400 yards on a pumpkin is an example of why I don't think a head shot on a moose at 598 yards is a good idea.

These were different rounds than the ones I was hunting with. These were reloads a friend did for me and were hotter. Thus my calculations were slightly off than by table.

I see. I don't doubt you are a better shot than I - the furthest I have ever shot a moose is 370 yards - but I don't see the point of taking a shot like that on an animal that is presenting just about a perfect broadside shot. An error is an error and it can lead to bad things. I have actually seen a deer with it's lower jaw blown off. Anyways, sweet rifle and I'm glad you found one - I have been looking for a while now and they seem to elude me!

Normally I would take a shot to the vitals. But I weighed the options of what a .308 could do at that distance and whether it would make the heart or not. I took the greater chance of dropping the animal.
