Ok, question time:

Ive sold my "entry level" 270 116 stainless savage and am in the market.

So I've narrowed it down to 2 calibers:

7mm rem mag
OR
Another .270

Looking specifically at Sako and tikka.

Ideas?

Btw: this is my main rifle. I have taken everything in a .270 130 grain with 1 shot, so it's NOT always the size that matters.

Disclosure: I don't reload.

Your personal preference would matter the most. I do like everything Tikka, but the Sako is in the same class. Handle them and pick the one that jumps out at you.

I'd take a 270 before the 7rem but again no big difference. Which one makes you smile more.

Not sure about exactly what they’ve improved from T3 to t3x, but I’ve owned several T3’s, an A7 (stainless synthetic, not roughtec) and now an 85 Finnlite.

Best value for the money in my opinion is the A7. Mines a 308 but principles hold for anything. What I like over the T3 is the 3 lug bolt (shorter throw), bolt unlock without taking safety off (a feature borrowed from the 85), and the 2 step mag release. You also get a limb saver on the A7 (as with the 85) which you don’t get on the T3.

Now owning the 85, you gain hardly any noticeable weight savings from an A7 by the time you add scope and rings and sling, you gain an all metal mag (A7 mags work fine as they’re polymer body but metal feed lips) and are paying $800ish dollars more. If I could do it all again and knew what I know now and was focused on best value for money, A7 is my pick and I’ve made that recommendation several times over.

If you want added precision I think the roughtec line of A7 are nice (I really like the composite Kevlar stocks) but the A7 stock is beautifully grippy (Albeit shows signs of wear) and is a functional tool. Roughtec though be weary of the added weight unless you’re OK with that.

Lastly all my Tikka/Sako rifles have shot MOA or under with a variety of factory ammo.

Im definitely biased towards a T3 T3X in 7 rem mag. Just slap a limbsaver on it and you are good to go. I put a radial brake on mine and now I can shoot it all day

I'd go with the 7 Remington Mag over the 270 win....between the two there is no advantage to the 270 other than the mag will hold more rounds...and with that in mind I'd pick a 280 AI over either :)

Personally I'd pick the Tikka over the Sako...same barrel quality with enough money left over to get into a real nice scope like a VX5HD to go on the rifle...just my 2 cents though! :)

I'm old school and use a M695 SS Tikka in .30-06, the poor man's magnum.
Never regretted the choice, it will take anything you care to point it at and you can find ammo for it anywhere.

I'm a huge .308 and .270 fan...but for a 1 rifle do it all, don't overlook the 300 win mag/300 WSM. They don't recoil as bad as you expect. Skip the muzzlebrake and put on a limbsaver pad instead and you can shoot the 300 mag comfortably even from the bench!

many tikka and sako models available in 300 mag!

Strictly adhering to your criteria, I'd pick a Sako stainless/laminate .270 (order number SBW21VM10) or 7mm Mag (SBX27VM10) depending on the game you're after. Mainly deer size go .270...mainly elk size go 7mmMag. Overall though the 7mmMag should have more authority putting down game even if ballistics are so close to the .270.

I’d opt for the 7mm. You have the extra range and stopping power if needed. If you require something with less recoil you can always put on a limb saver or even a muzzle break if it’s in your budget.
Buy it once and cry once

I don't want to get flamed here, but I handled a Tikka at the LGS several years ago and cycled it a few times before handing it back to the salesman and knowing I would never own one. The action, stock and tiny ejection port all felt 'inexpensive' in my hands. Better than any Remington, yes, but I would not recommend one over some of the other suggestions in this thread.
