I just bought a new Armalite from Wolverine and am eager to take it to the range. I've already cleaned it and oiled it and crept around my place pretending to clear it making bang-bang noises and.... I'm gonna stop now. Needless to say I'm eager to take it to the range.

A friend of mine suggested firing one round and cleaning the barrel each time for the first 30 rounds to break it in. I was wondering if anyone else has heard of this or done it. Does anyone have a preferred way of breaking in an AR that they'd like to share?

Thanks

Then after you have broken the bangstick in.... practice, practice and more position practice. Think about shooting your black rifle in any competition.

Why ?

Because we CAN !!

not a breaking in tip, just wanted to drop a line and say congrats on the new toy, i'm getting one soon too, but a Stag, from Walter at Arms East, enjoy i know i willwhen i recieve mine:D

Congrats for sure

I have an new AR-180B comming in, is there a break in period or meathod for that ?? Does anyone know??? Or do i just fire her to my little hearts content.

:runaway:

all i'd do is run a couple of patches through the bore to makes sure she's clear and pick up any gunk hiding, then clean after each session- not so much to clean the bore as to get all the powder residue and other junk that's deposited in the chamber area- remember the ar15 uses gas directly on the carrier to push it back- and to prevent rust, etc- there's a very good maintance regime on the net, but i don't bother pulling out the buffer and spring

Does it matter if you clean the barrel before shooting or not? After how many rounds should it be cleaned (chrome-moly)?

Most new guns come with a layer of preservative on the bore, and elsewhere. It may or may not be visable. Clean the bore completely with solvent and patches before you shoot it for the first time.
