New AR and opinions on red dots

The only thing I'm not too hot on for Vortex RDS is the battery life. Holosun have comparable battery life to Aimpoint, and you can get them with the EOTech-style 65 MOA circle. I haven't broken one yet, but their warranty is top-notch. The warranty was for dirty, smudged glass. If you have excellent eyesight, you can see dust inside the tube. It doesn't affect shooting (and you won't notice it), but it's indicative of its lower-cost nature.

got Holosun HS510c with "eotech" reticle and I like it. You can alternate between circle with 2moa dot, just circle, and just 2moa dot. Red dot comes with QD mount that gets you absolute co-witness with front sight.
For what I use rifle for - it is more than adequate. There are videos on utube with torture tests of another holosun model 503GU... so yea, may be it is not made in NA, but quality is there.

I have the same rifle and put a Vortex Spitfire 3x on it and love it. I was going to go with the Strikefire, but my eyes aren't what they use to be so the 3x helps.

I put the Voretx Spitfire 3X on my AR also. The etched reticle is great for day use, and when your battery dies. I have become accustomed to using magnified optics on service rifles so I wanted something similar for my own.

Personal testimony on Vortex warranty, had a Sparc gen 1 malfunctioning, they replaced with gen 2 no questions asked.

Thats the issue with Vortex crap. A rock solid warrenty you'll have to use...lol. I learned my lesson after the 3rd RMA and moved on to Aimpoints

Yep vortex red dots are ok if one accepts them as lifetime backed toys, not ok for betting your life on it or deploying with it.
So in Canada for any civilian imaginary "fighting gun" that one wants to keep authentic, vortex won't do.

5 years ago I would of said Aimpoint were too expensive and useless. Now I understand training with good gear is important.

I find the Spitfire to be well made and I have had good results for the 3X out to 2-300m (on the rare chance I get) but I'd say this.

Most of my AR and carbine shooting occurs inside 30m and the fixed power Vortex magnification messes with my perception at close ranges. So that makes me prefer the Eotech or the 1X Spitfire. However, now I find both of these choices to be unnecessarily heavy and or bulky to use in these circumstances.

So I get better results with a smaller reflex sight..does the same job as the others without looking through the tube that the Spitfire uses. I move to more traditional scopes (1-6 x 30mm) when the transition is necessary to magnification. I didn't find a fixed power anything to be ideal unless the range is also fixed.

As Dilligaf posted, having a reliable rugged optic for training is paramount. Some folks would sooner focus on shooting than returning sub par optics on a regular basis that have failed under soft range conditions.

FWIW, I had a EoTech 552 on my AR for the longest time, and I loved it. I sent it back last year when the whole "doesn't keep zero in extreme temperature" fiasco erupted 18 months ago or so. I returned it not because this was a concern for me (I don't shoot in extreme conditions anymore), but my eyes aren't as good and I wanted to put a variable powered optic on my AR. The return of the EoTech (and subsequent refund) easily paid for a new Vortex Strike Eagle (with plenty left over).

I'm casually looking at RDS again (thinking of a 7.62x39 AR build), and I'm liking what I see with the Aimpoint Micro T-2.

EoTECH's are pretty good. Nice and durable and the price is pretty good. If you don't plan on shooting in prolonged extreme conditions, it's a good red dot optic.

You can often find Aimpoint PROs on the EE for $450ish. It's a good size and weight for that rifle, and I think it's one of the best deals-- you get a top-quality sight for hardly any more than a mid-range price.

Without reading through all the "vortex has a great warranty" pandering, ill say what I always say. If you've got any intention of doing some real shooting with your rifle, spend your money where it matters: barrel, trigger, OPTIC.

I bought a strike fire years ago when I had just started getting into the sport, and it was never a reliable optic. Sold it and bought an aimpoint, and ill never buy any other red dot ever again.

Buy once, crye once.

Bonus points if you get the pun.
