The reasons for wanting something better than a standard post are obvious I think, let me know if you like my modification.

Cheers

Maybe....I don't know who invents these forward/backwards rules, but if I mounted it the other way I'd have some pretty ugly wear marks on my handguard.

Forwards, backwards, whatever. What is the sight picture like? Has it made a difference in target acquisition and/or accuracy? That's important to me. :D

Oh, and, how did you do it?

The post is about 1/3 the size it used to be...instead of 12-15 MOA, its probably now around 5....that's the modification I made

I used a dremel and a file. The orange tip is actually a bit of a ball atop a pretty thin column, so it pops out pretty good. Haven't tested it yet though

It lying flat isn't a fault of the folding deisgn, it's a problem with the handguard. The sight is intended to be mounted on a continuous rail handguard, not a gas block rail.

I wouldn't be so sure. The front sight looks too tall to be a railed front sight. I think it is a gas block front sight, but it just doesn't appear to work with the rail the OP is using. Either way its irrelevant, the sight folds down and locks up.

As for the slimmer front post. Why? If you're looking for extreme precision with irons, you're using the wrong sighting system. Good work on the mod, but there are commercial options available.

wrong you are, the front sight is specifically designed for a gas block rail.

I don't think I said I was going for extreme precision, in fact, in 5 MOA is extreme precision, maybe shooting isnt the right sport for me.

And it's not fair to suggest irons aren't capable of extreme precision, just looks at some of the Army -AMU shoots they have.

.. It's designed for a railed gas block that's the same height as the handguard. The BUIS sights are a flush fold design. I have a DPMS quad rail gas block on one of my AR's and I'm using the same front sight on it. I notched the top rear of the hood so that it would fold over the hand guard. There are a few gas block rail heights available.

So long as it works and you like it, who are we to say it's wrong? It's right for you.. rock on.

What I was trying to say whilst being overtired is that the sight should lay flat against the handguard. You can see how the sight ring is sloped on the what should be the front and the front of the mount is also sloped where it has the MI logo. It would also be easier to deploy using your left hand to push it forward and up then to pull it back, less distance to reach. Shooter preference I suppose, and it works for you.

Does the colour help with your sight picture acquisition?

The AR is a minute of man system, especially with irons. I never said irons weren't capable of great precision. Just that irons aren't designed for nor do they excel at great precision.

Good grief people, the poor ba$tard just wanted an "attaboy" or "good idea" from you, not a lecture on handguards, folding sights, gas blocks and myths of sight radius. I'll start so you get the idea:

Good job Onagoth, looks like that will give you a finer front sight, and more visibility. Other companies offer similar sights, so you must be on to something, plus, you made it yourself!
