My first CZ 858. Had the guys at Arma-Coat touch it up a nice flat black. 1000 times better than the stock paint job. Niiiiice and smoooth. Thanks Barret.

I was a little frustrated with this gun a first. Took it out of the box and put ten rounds at some plastic bottles at 50 yards. I think I knocked over one. Figured I had an afternoon of sighting the gun in ahead of me. That was until I walked over and looked at the bottles. The rounds were going right on through them. Almost looked like melted holes on the front side. Pretty wild!

A quick question for those in the know...

Should the barrel clean up spotless when they are new like this?

I can run solvent through it every night and still pull out more black. Sometimes blue/green with the black which i understand is copper. The last three nights I've gone back and cleaned it without firing in between just to see what's up. I'm not sure if the oil sitting in it overnight loosens it up or what is going on.

Could some arma-coat or parkerizing be in there and just coming out now?
 
I've never gotten a spotlessly clean patch out of my 858s regardless of what method or how much I clean. The Czech surplus ammo is filthy and the non-chrome bore doesn't help matters.

Nice looking rifle.

i dont even try to get it clean , 3-4 times with the brush and 3-4 time with the patch. thats it.
 
  1. Spray wipeout.
  2. After an hour or 2 I run a clean patch threw it to get out the rest of wipeout.
  3. Then I scrub with a brass brush covered in CLP.
  4. Clean patch down the barrel again then 2 brake clean patches.
  5. 1 more patch with CLP oil.

The arma-coat is really nice. There was no way I was going to spend a month of weekends stripping paint, learn to parkerize and then try my hand at painting. Just to end up with sub par finish.

Satain... I'm going to try some wipeout this weekend. It has been suggested to me a few times. The G96 I use gets a bit of copper out but I normally just use it for final oiling and de-stinking of the rifle. ;)

Just a heads up...

Wipeout works like a charm. No brushing over and over and over and over etc. Spray... let it sit... wipe it out... repeat if needed.

I let it sit an hour the first time and then did an overnight soak. I did two more one hour soaks and the last time came out pretty much with a white patch.

I have yet to compare the brake to the stock one. I'm planning on doing a compare the next time out if I remember to bring the stock tip. But to be honest... I bought it because of reviews on CGN and I think it looks bad-ass. :)

Compared to other rifles without brakes shaped like this one... I've gotta learn to watch what's around the sides of the muzzle a little more... re-directs a pretty good blast to the sides. Got a face full of dry rotten stump dust the other day.
 
Did some shootin this weekend. Killed some logs, a stump, one beer can and a couple of rocks. Surprisingly accurate plinker.

Tried the CZ with and without the NEA Heavy Brake this outing. I like the Heavy Brake for sure. The gun jumped around a lot less and the muzzle blast looks neat at dusk.

Note the casing a few inches above the gun... :)

Trying to dispatch a beer can at dusk. It looked like it was going to charge my buddy so I really had no choice but to defend him. I actually put three rounds through it at 100 yards without knocking it off the stick. And nope... we were not drinking and shooting ...not my kind of thing ...we found the cans on-site. And... yup... we took all the shredded cans and as many casings as we could find could off-site... almost all 140 of them :)

Check out the blast off the NEA Heavy Brake... pretty cool.

July Updates

After half a case of surplus, some upgrades and a bottle or two of wipeout here is the state of my CZ858.

I ghetto-fabbed some rails into the stock handguards. I can't remember where I saw it first but it works pretty darn good. The main reason I bothered to do this was I find the stock front end too small for my hands. This way I can put my afg on it and some side rail guards to beef up the width. That and I don't like the front sling attachment point in front of my hand.

So... I had to do a bit of dremeling to the beaver barf pieces but they fit tight. The bottom 3 rails are bolted through the stock wood/plastic and then through some thin bar aluminum inside. The top rail (not really useful for much as the whole stock guard wobbles) goes right into the internal metal sleeve. The bottom is solid enough for better grips and survives the abuse of the bi-pod.

I've actually taken off the large magpul rail covers and put the ladder rail covers on both sides. The Magpul ones added a nice width but I like the way the ladders fit my hand better.

Since this photo I put a braided black paracord on the stock and had to move the AFG back a bit on the rails. The vents from the gas tube got me a couple of times.

And a bi-pod... just to see how it fares. No loosening or cracking of the ghetto-fabbing to date.

I can pretty much get the same groupings with irons kneeling but it is nice to have the option to be able to put it on a table and sit down (I'm getting old)
