I'd be very curious to know if the emblem on the grip (it's supposed to be a likeness of the 7th century mid east hero-conquerer "Tariq" of which the pistol model is named after), resembles that of Saddam Hussien instead.

I saw a couple of those pistols when I was in Iraq, but they had the emblem removed or defaced, as to be unrecognizeable. It wasn't till after I saw a picture/portrait of Saddam in that very same pose (He apparently fancied himself as a conquerer/empire builder) that maybe the anti-Saddam owners of these liberated pistols defaced them for that reason?

There weren't any distinguishing markings on the ones I saw to indicate issuing to any special units like the Republican Guard, Fedeyeen, etc.,

Anyone have any input?

Tariq Ibn Ziyad is the supposed likeness. The triangle shaped marking on the left side of some frames is just an Iraqi national marking. On US sites they like to say it is a RG marking but it is seen on aircraft insignia and even some Lee Enfields that are about.
