Well the door bell rang at 12:30 yesterday and the Postman (Lady actually) dropped off my new Ruger SP101 .22lr 4.2" stainless baby. Thanks P&D for your excellent fast service. Bought May 29th PM, shipped May 30 arrived June 4 not bad 3 working days delivery over the week-end.
After quickly unwrapping my new addition to my family I was pleasantly surprised to find the gun was everything I hoped it would be. A quick inspection and wipe with a cloth and it was off to the range, along with 300 rounds of bulk .22lr Federal ammo.
Setting up a target at 10 yards I found the gun shooting about 5" low. After several more attempts making adjustments along the way I got the gun zeroed in. I then moved the target out to 15 yards and blasted away. What became apparent very quickly was the DA trigger pull is heavy but smooth with no gritty feeling at all. SA pull was quite acceptable with a crisp break. With some practice shooting DA I was able to keep all shots inside a 4" circle rapid fire. SA and the groups fell to an inch which is all I thought I could expect from the bulk ammo.
Moving the target out to 20 yards, remembering by know I had some time to get used to the trigger, groups remained within the 4" circle slow fire DA and about the same when I shot SA. Rapid fire DA and the groups opened up to 6".
The last 50 rounds were spent rolling 2" x 6" wood blocks on the ground starting at 10 yards. What a blast! I usually had them out to 20 yards before they were splinters.
I had my GP-100 with me as well. At 20 yards shooting DA I managed to keep all my lead reloads within 6" circle, same as my new 101. Love it.
Fit and finish on the gun is excellent. I only have four minor knocks on the gun:
1. The slots on the rear sight screws are very thin so make sure you have a screw driver with almost a knife like blade for sight adjustment.
2. The DA pull is quite heavy . I am hoping with more rounds down range it will lighten up. Search is on for a lighter spring set-up. The offset of course is I had NO light strikes on the bulk ammo.
3. The pin that holds the rear sight on has a habit of walking out so I'll have to keep an eye on it when shooting at the range.
4. This gun is so much fun to shoot I know I will spending more money at Wal Mart picking up boxes of the Federal bulk ammo.
I'll run some Stingers through the gun to see how they perform as well. With my ageing eyes I doubt I'll get better performance than I did yesterday.
I'll add gun cost me $600 which is less than MSRP listed on Ruger's website. Nice to see one manufacturer selling guns up here at close to the same price as they are sold for in the US.
If you are looking for a .22LR fun gun this little Ruger has to be on your list.
Take Care

ps I'll post pictures later today of my new baby.
