New ATF Form 6

It looks like on the updated form from Jan 2018 they require from Canadians either a hunting license from any state or an invitation to a match (or a membership in a US club is just as valid I guess). I was sure on previous versions, we no longer needed a hunting license or invitation. That's the questions 13-15. Can anyone confirm this?

Not correct..............on the new form you would normally answer 13 as NO to entering with a nonimmigrant visa, you are then told to skip 14 (hunting license) and 15 (Match invite) and go straight to 16.......................ONLY if you answer YES to 13 that you are entering with a nonimmigrant visa would you answer 14, 15

Having a club membership does not count.

Answer as above, but you will still need a personal invite from the club everytime you cross the border. Have the club write in all of the dates on the invite.

Dude, I cross the border with my guns weekly.....never had an invite.....and was never been asked for one

Show me a document from ATF that states this

The ATF does NOT determine who can enter the country and under what circumstances, CBP does

You may not absolutely *need* an invite, but border guards can demand documentation from you to prove you are entering the US for a lawful reason.

As a standard rule, I always have one when crossing the border , along with a printout of my hotel reservation

YOU decide do this....and that's fine....nothing wrong to have more than less

But, you DO NOT NEED one......different thing

Like you can have a trigger lock like I do for all my guns in the safe.......but I DO NOT NEED one on my non-restricted ;)

Peace man

You need one if they demand to see one, otherwise you could very well be refused entry

I've got the distinct impression on a couple border crossings that I would be refused by the guard if I didn't have a match invitation / proof of registration. I think one guy told me "you have to convince me you have a valid reason to bring these guns into my country."

NO you don't!

Ok, show any US government document saying so......... You won't have one.....

Sorry Bud.....you are FAKE NEWS

Lol...would love to see you arguing that point at the US border.
The US Border guards can and quite often do demand that an alien provide proof of their reason to visit the USA. If they aren't satisfied, they will turn you back. Having a invite to a match or a gun club, is a supporting document, for your reason to visit.

You do not need no invite

You might not need a match invitation in the state that you cross into and BATF doesn't require it for the 6NIA, but if I try and cross into Montana with just my Form 6NIA, Montana Border Patrol will tell me to have a nice day going home. Border states differ on additional documentation required by Border Patrol officers. And if you think you can tell their officers what the paperwork requirement, please tell us how you do.

I have a membership card to a gun range 5 minutes away from the border....... I don't need an INVITE

Anyway, you guys can not bring any related government documentation to the table......so...Have all the invites you want and carry on!

That I understand.....NY State is requiring it......not Vermont......So, it is not a federal requirement

Right on....my fake news seems to agree with what the US CBP says right on their own website

https://www.cbp.gov/travel/international-visitors/applying-admission-united-states

Q: Will I be able to travel into or through the United States?
A:
Aliens seeking to lawfully enter into the United States must establish their admissibility to the satisfaction of the CBP officer. This is done as part of the inspection process. The reasons that a traveler who is applying for admission into the United States could be inadmissible are found in INA § 212(a).

By the way....there is also this right on the Form 6NIA

Most people have no clue just how much power US CBP agents have in a border inspection station....***hint for those who seem extra dense tonight....the answer is a lot.****

Note that if anyone thinks they've been unlawfully denied entry into the US, they can contact both the ATF and the Consular Affairs Bereau of Foreign Affairs Canada and ask them to intervene....but this is kind of a moot point at the border. The only option available at the border is to ask to speak to a supervisor and make your case there.

But US CBP can certainly demand to see proof you belong to the gun club. If you can't do that....they could deny entry.

CBP are absolutely within their authority to demand documentation to support the reason a traveller has for entering the US. You might get through without it, or they may deny entry if you don't have it. It is totally upto the discretion of the CBP officer on duty (and their supervisor if you escalate)

Tell CBP you're going to a wedding...
Expect to be asked to produce you invitation.
True story.
