Hi Everyone

My dad has been using his old mauser werke oberndorf rifle (imported by ruko) in .300 wby mag for a long time. He is convinced that he wants a new barrel to replace the current one (I havent looked at the crown or anything like that). I was thinking of getting him a new barrel for his birthday. I was wondering if anyone can recommend a good barrel , i realize it may need some machining to fit, finding a gunsmith is not an issue for us, luckily.

Anyways, what i want to know is, who makes a good sporter weight barrel to replace the old one? And where should i buy it?

thanks!

I've had good barrels from Krieger, Ron Smith, Sportco, and Ted Gaillard. There are lots of good barrels to choose from, provided you know what you want with respect to the choice of stainless or chrome-moly, contour, fluting if any, finished length, rate of twist, etc. It might be best to call a few gunsmiths to see what they have in stock, as it can take months to receive a special order barrel, then more time yet before the gunsmith has a chance to chamber it, cut the crown, and install it on your rifle.

PM Sean at North Shore Barrels (Juan Valdez)... he carries Krieger and Shilen barrels... see if he can help you out.

Gaillard makes a great barrel; and I'd say that even if he wasn't from Saskatchewan.

One advantage to getting him to make a barrel is that he will do custom profiles including copying your barrel, which can save a lot of stock work.
