Hey all. Im havin a hard time finding a barrel for my shooter. I have a polytech m14 in a ebr chassis. I want to have a 18.5 inch barrel. I ordered a new gas system to start my build. My friend is a master machinist, who was going to cut my barrel down and rethread for flashhider.
Problem is the threads on chinese rifles are diffrent than the threads on my new gas system. So....I need a barrel...

Any help would be nice. ..
Regards,
Scott.

STOP...There are no threads on the gas system except for the gas plug.

You can order a new plug from the states. I have a M1A spec gas system on my Norc barrel. You may need to order a new piston but I just took my norc piston and hit it with some emery cloth and then polished it. No problems.

Tree line will have a lot of the small pieces so will Brownell

I ordered from brownells...
M14 GAS CYLINDER
M14 GAS LOCK SIGHT DOVETAIL
M14 GAS PISTON
M14 TRITIUM CLOSE COMBAT SIGHT
Ididnt order a gas plug...I didnt see one in brownells...I figured it came with the gas cylinder. ..crap.
Is the gas lock going to thread on my polytech barrel?

Alright you didn't mention the gas lock, your screwed :)

Carry on with the barrel...look on the EE, i think Tactical Teacher and someone else were selling barrels

I don't think so. Everything fits but the lock due to different threading. Oh, and I'm not sure your gas plug will fit the gas lock either. Again, threads are different I believe.

Your best bet is to replace the cylinder and piston, but reuse the chinese gas lock.

"...My friend is a master machinist, who was..." It's technically illegal for him to work on any firearm at his work. Law says he must have a PAL and the business must have a firearms business licence. Plus while all smithies are machinists, not all machinists are smithies. Being a master machinist doesn't mean you know squat about firearms.
Why do you want a short barrel?

A barrel isn't a firearm, and it will have to come off before you cut and thread, and I don't see anywhere in the op's post that his friend doesn't know anything about guns and that he doesn't have a pal in any case. Even if it is true, if you are with him he doesn't need a pal.

All you need to do is get a USGI gas plug and use the norinco gas cylinder lock if you don't want to spend the money on a barrel. I also believe there are some cylinder locks with the sight base that use metric threads. Check http://www.bitsofpieces.com/ . They had some a little while ago.

I want a shorter barrel cause, well....I want to make a good, minimalistic, bush gun for hunting, or "camping with guns", as my wife would say.
This is a lil side project I have. I wish I could get a Socom 16, f*cking love that rifle.

just sayin...

Well get the DA Socom18. Looks like a Socom16, feels like a Socom16, smells like a Socom16, shoots like a socom16,so it must be a Socom 16 right??,...nope,..it's an ingenious Oriental way to make a non-restricted, huntable, loveable, ogleable 18.5" Battle Rifle look the part for your Socom cool factor, while giving you the ballistics of the 18.5" barrel M-14. A win-win situation except maybe............
Ensure bolt is engaging fully on both receiver lugs if you buy one. Seems to be an issue on a few of the latest Socom18's.
