new barrel for stevens 200

Barrel swap

ok say i want to put a heavier target barrel on a stevens 200.
it has the regular sporting 22 inch barrel on it right now in .223
this is probably not going to happen right away but i was wondering exactly how to do it.
so i know the barrel threads on and i need a barrel wrench to remove the old one and then install the new barrel.
now what im not sure of is how do you know how far to thread it on before locking it in place?
how do i measure the headspace? is that the right terminology?
i will be researching how to do it online but i thought i would ask here also.
thanks.

:bangHead: Have a gun smith do it. With all respect, by your post, you have little experience with barrel swaps/head space gauges. The stevens 200 stock(Actually old model grey SAVAGE composite stock) will require barrel channel work ,as well. may be an expensive job. good luck.

The standard stevens stock takes very little time to be made to accept a bull barrel. Its not hard work to do a reasonable job with dremel, file and then repaint. Depending on barrel length it may be extremely unbalanced and need lead in the butt to balance it out. After all that it will still have that skinny foreend. Crap for shooting on the bench with real consistancy.
If you are upgrading the barrel then to get the most out of it you should upgrade to a decent stock.
Just saying because I have been through the above, but that is just my experience yours may differ.

Swapping a barrel is easy, its fun to learn how to do it your self. The hard part is getting the barrel off the first time.
