New barrel in old receiver

hi gents....
have aquestion: for the ruger 10/22, I want to change the old ( about 5000 rounds) factory barrel to a new Green Mountain 20" bull barrel, leaving the rest of the gun as is. will it improve the accuracy of the gun, and is it a good idea in general?
any input is valued :)

yes and yes. The difference in accuracy between the factory barrel and a GM heavy barrel can be significant. You will have to open up the barrel channel of the stock
 
Like super 7 said; yes and yes :). The GM is a great route for aftermarket barrels. If yuo have not given the gun a GOOD clean, you may want to do that. I mean the bolt and the trigger group. Take out all the parts, and clean them with butches bore shine or another ceaning solution and scrub. This is if you have not cleaned it yet.
 
ok, guys.....just came back from the range....
at 50m with the factory free floating barrel, groope are about 1.5-3 inches...
I`m counting flyers :( the trigger is 2.5lbs....the barrel was cleaned....
does it mean that after 5000rounds the factory barrel is dead????????

i'm not sure a free floating barrel on this receiver is such a good thing.aluminum is soft and considering the barrel is not threaded in,i would guess to say that it benifits from full bedding instead.have you had good results with this same config before?

the free floating barrel was made according to the 10/22 TIPS tread, 2.5 inches of the barrel were bedded.

So, I have the Choate Dragunov Style Stock bedded for the factory barrel(2.5 inches from the reseiver). Question: shoud I rebed it for the new heavy barrel or get new stock?????

I have cleaned the 10/22 after every 500 rounds: bore, reseiver and trigger group.
